maybe like this? The cord in the picture is an "Emergency Stop" cord. You can connect one end to your shirt and the other end is connected by a magnet to the treadmill. It is supposed to come off easily if you lose control on the treadmill. I would think there was some other exposed cord. If it was the "Emergency Stop" cord, then that treadmill maker has a lawsuit coming.

Or changes to how it's manufactured. It would be great if they recalled models and made changes so that it won't happen to another child. Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture! I also doubt that the manufacturer has ever represented their product was safe for or designed to be used by four year olds. [Edited 5/27/09 22:59pm] I don't want you to think like me. Would you recall cars because an unattended child released the brakes? The solution is attending to children, not calling a product defective. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I have not heard any details about this but it may be that the cord could have been unrelated to the machine itself. Coulda been a curtain near by...could have been something she was playing with, could a been a sweatshirt cord....who knows really.
so very sad. Yes, we all know children need to be supervised but we also all know that in our own homes we let our children go and play, we do not constantly supervise them...that's impossible. Its a horrible horrible accident that could happen to anyone at anytime. God Bless them. "not a fan" yeah...ok
