Once mom filed for divorce a few months later, and dad had to pay child support, things looked better. It was YEARS before I ever had a saltine or a pickle on the same plate again. My brother and I can laugh about it now, but it was so NOT funny at the time. haha It's amazing the resilience of kids because we felt like we were in Beverly Hills when mom would bake a Mama Celeste Pizza on Fridays I felt the same way when mom would have some extra money and bring home Sonic or something. There were times we would come home from church or wherever, and there would be a huge box on the front porch full of food. Stuff like pasta, Stove Top (which I LURVED), bread, milk, canned goods. And the note would just say "Love, Jesus". I have a hunch who brought it over, but I never knew. One time some lady from church showed up on a Saturday afternoon, as we're mowing the yard and doing stuff, and she brought like 4 bags of groceries. Just out of the blue. We did have help, but it wasn't a weekly or even monthly thing. Overall, it was hard. But did loves me some Stove Top!

Okay in general that's gross. When I 1st moved to Albany, NY, I used to order out a lot the first couple of months, just from being busy w/ a new job and no car to get to the store. I would order chinese food that would last me for a couple of days. I realized that if I steamed that fried rice the next day, it was like new. Never tasted gross. Oddly I had a rice steamer/cooker given to me by a friend when I first moved here. Sesame chicken didn't fare so well.

Anyway, once when I was high, I took a tortilla and filled it with sliced bananas and Reese's Peanut Butter chips (you know, like chocolate chips but they're peanut butter.) I wrapped it up like a burrito and fried it in butter. Actually, it was delicious. *scribble*scribble* That one's goin in my recipe book.

I remember a particularly trying time in college when I discovered the joy of chicken backs. 34 cents a pound. They were esentially soup making bones with just a sliver of succulent meat on them, but for 34 cents,it was a blessing in disguise.
When I was little, i read a wonderful story about a traveler who went from town to town feeding villagers on a special magic soup he could make out of only 3 rocks. this is a story that always nspired me even in the leanest of times I've always been one to keep a hella amount of spices, dried herbs, oil and vinegars around in bulk, so that even if all I have is one potato, I'm going to find a way to turn that potato OUT. I remember holiday week with my college roomates with no money between us . In the fridge we had: milk 1 can Carnation milk 2 eggs 1 potato 2 carrots 1 bell pepper 2 banannas rice 1 white onion 2 tomatoes 2 pound package of chicken backs for 68 cents 1 package ramen noodles crackers about an inch of apple juice Since we always had oil, vinegar, spices, this is what I came up with to feed 3 people once a day: Meal 1. Curried chicken backs and rice Meal 2. homemade tortilla bread (like roti bread, flour & water) with smashed garlicky curried potato and shredded carrot, chopped onion, and l. The side salad for the three of us was a thinly sliced tomato divided on three saucers with 1 divied onion slice, 1/4 chopped pepper, and dressng made from oil, vinegar, and 1 tbsp. of the apple juice Meal 3. Ramen Noodle cakes (chopped ramen noodles flour, egg white, ginger,1 inch of shredded carrot, LOTSA dried herbs), dipped in soy sauce Meal 4. Tomato soup made from blended chicken boullion cube, 1 tomato, handful of crackers & a little milk (the crackers make the soup thicker) & rice pudding for dessert (I can't stand rice pudding to this day) Meal 5. Bananna pancakes with fake ice cream we made by freezing the rest of the Carnation in a ziplock with some vanilla. We didn't have syrup I so I boiled down the half cup of apple juice with butter and sugar Meal 6. Chicken &Dumplings (chicken soup from boullion cube, with handful of leftover potato, the other 1/4 bell pepper chicken backs, and homemade flour dumplings inside) Meal 7. Egg fried rice with last of the shredded carrot, onion, last half of bell pepper and whatever chicken slivers were left. I stretched the egg by mixing it with water, a little milk and a pinch of flour and baking poweder to fluff it up and make it look like there was more egg than was actually there... That week we drank water or made iced tea from some leftover teabags we had. and squirted fake lemon juice from that plastic lemon in it to give it some flavor.... It was more than three stones to make magic soup, but I'm still proud that I could get three mouths fed while we were killing ourselves to get through school ![]() [Edited 5/22/09 1:29am]
