God, I must be so dull, thinking about it. lol

I was reading Byron's post again and thinking 'yeah, photography and travel, I love those too'. And yet, I don't think I'm that bothered about them really and wouldn't be gutted if I couldn't do either.

So two things I like best I'm ultimately apathetic about? Does that mean I'm apathetic towards life? lol eek

That would be my definition of financially stable/content ...doing ok....
But at what point does that change to wealthy/rich ...or is ur answer still the same? ..... biggrin

Still the same, but in regards to what Byron said, it would need to change if I had children of my own. But the same would still apply. Financially stable/content is as good as rich in my book. The importance of having enough makes any extra things I could want rather than need pale by comparison. I just don't really find myself wanting all that much.

I think its easier to define (rich) if u think of it as ....At what point would I go around telling people I am financially rich/wealthy (um not that we would necessarily go and tell people that lol)

Ok, so since I can have a camera and can travel a bit those are my luxuries I enjoy therefore I'm rich. So rich for me would be those necessities I listed plus a few luxuries. That seems alright. smile

What struck me though is that while I'd say I LOVE photography, I wouldn't care, as in really truly care, if I couldn't do it. Then I tried to think of other things or experiences beyond necessities that I could say I really, truly care about and couldn't come up with anything, except maybe music. I couldn't live without having some music to listen to, but is that a luxury? Then there are things like big family barbecues and eating out which could be luxuries elsewhere but here is just an everyday thing that can be enjoyed by (nearly) all.

Wow. Do I just have absolutely no ambition or passions? falloff I just like life. You know, getting up in the morning and still being alive, putting food in my mouth and it tastes nice. Feeling that nice amount of sleepiness where you know you'll sleep well so you just enjoy the feeling for a few minutes before falling into a nice, cozy sleep.

hmmm Interesting thread (for once!), Ocean. wink

I can't lie, I wouldn't complain if I were to become rich somehow. But all I really want or need is enough to support myself and with any luck a little for saving for a rainy day.

coupla things from mr holier-than-thou

i still feed my passion... i'm about to spend $1500 on a microphone... but it's also how i earn my living

byron... i was on hamilton fairly recently... had a ball

there's a french restaurant here in melbourne ... vu de mond or sumfin... anyway... it's like a 10 course meal for $250 per person... my wife wanted to go.... it was doing my head in that we could spend $500 on a frickin' meal.... so we decided to go but to send the same amount of money to africa... it cost us a grand for a night out... but i was ok with it then

one measure for me about being 'rich' is the ability to enjoy new exeperiences

See, I don't think there's anything at all wrong with that...in fact, I'd guess that most of us would be envious of you lol nod. I think there's a serenity to finding contentment in simply living and the "everyday" pleasures...I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to experience as much as Life provides, though, either. I don't think either one is really any "better" than the other...just depends on which one brings you happiness and peace of mind.

For me, I know I need to be able to travel...when I do, it feels as if that's exactly what my soul was meant to experience. Different lands, different cultures, different foods, different languages, different scenery...or just traveling around the U.S.. Hell, just traveling 3 hours away is often enough lol lol...the same feeling comes with photography, I feel completely at peace with a camera in my hand. The sound of the shutter release at the exact moment when I know I've found an image is exhilarating...when I go long periods without taking any photos I start to feel stagnant and lethargic, like I'm wasting the time given to me almost.

So for me, those two things being an unobstructed part of my life would make me feel "rich" (along with all the other shit I listed lol)...

HONESTLY?

When I have enough money to just frivolously buy a flight into space on a Rushian rocket and bring a friend with me so I can see what it feels like to have them tea-bag me in zero-gravity.

I know I will have made it then.

I'm like you, no really BURNING passion or ambition

I feel like I've achieved all the stuff I set out to do already confused

I'm certainly not rolling in money, but really, I can't think of anything I need that I couldn't just go out and get if I wanted to, and even then, I don't really WANT to that much! I mean if I was STUPID rich I'd go learn to fly and get my own jumbo jet or something, but I am just as happy without!

I had well over 1,000 photos on my PC and only really bothered with post-processing on maybe 75% of them. The shot of hamilton island up above was taken in 2004 but I didn't do the post-processing until late last year lol lol...

And I did this thing in Photoshop that mimicked a polarizing filter...it doesn't always turn out well but on this one it helped. nod

This past year has been a real struggle for me and my family - so being able to pay all my bills, feed my family, clothe the kids and have a few small luxuries, like days out sounds like heaven to me right now - but I would consider this to be 'financially comfortable' rather than 'rich'. For me 'rich' means that we could afford the best of everything, travel wherever we want, in style, have money in the bank and more importantly be able to make a difference to other peoples lives too: giving large amounts to charity and family and friends.

For now I'd settle for not having to worry about paying my bills sigh
I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off
