Help! Filing for unemployment

If someone has went through this before, and could help me with some of the questions that I have on the form I would really appreciate it. There is no unemployment office here, and when I called someone to ask my questions I was left even more confused. Help! nuts

Okay they want me to list my employers. My last "employer" was my uncle, but he passed away, which is why am I am doing this. I also care for my nephews, but my sister dos not pay me for there care NCO (North Coast Opportunites) does. So I thought I had to list them as my employer, but they say that they are not my employer whofarted Well someone is paying me,and that usually would be considered the employer. Also when I file my taxes I have to file this income as self employment. One of the questions asks if I am self employed,do I put yes? I don't run a Daycare,I just care for my nephews.

Wow, you've raised some really good questions there. Unfortunately, I don't know what the answers are, since I've never been in your situation before. hmmm

It sounds like u should list your uncle as your last employer, and if ur being paid for something else, they will know this. You might only qualify for partial benefits since you have another source of income.
You do have to file that as self-employment come tax time and will owe monies (best to take some out of every check you get that way when u have to pay the tax bill, it won't hurt the pocket so bad.

I see by your profile that you live in California. I just googled "California Unemployment Office", and came up with this link:

http://www.edd.ca.gov/une...umbers.htm

I would try calling the number 1-800-300-5616, since it says it's the number to call for general information. If that is not the correct number, I'm sure the person you speak to on the phone will direct you to the correct number. The people I have dealt with in the unemployment office in my state (Ohio) have always been very friendly and helpful. Good luck.

I thought you could only collect unemployment if your employer paid into your unemployment account? I'm not sure about Cali but that's how it works in Texas.

Yes that's how it works here as well,I am filing for unemployment due to me losing my job of caring for my uncle. I only make about $300 a month caring for my nephews.

I believe so. My IHSS worker told me that I should qualify for unemployment.

You need to ask them what your unemployment account balance is. This is the amount that will determine how much your checks are.

Should I do this before filing?

No, go ahead and file, but you need to ask what your balance is. In Texas it's printed on the letter you get after you file, but you can call and ask. Knowing this will give you a good idea of what you MAY get each week.
