The point? To bring in new fans to a franchise that has been on life support for the last number of years. I never watched Star Trek, but I am eagerly awaiting this movie. Looks like it's going to be good.

I'll let you know on Monday, but I would guess there's going to be about 100 million points over the weekend. Actually it starts tonight, so maybe 120 million. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

I'm not a trekkie by any means but I must admit the new movie looks great. And being the sci-fi/horror/fantasy geek that I am, I'm sure I'll being see this tomorrow. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

It's going to destroy X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

People are loyal to franchises they love. And sci-fi fans are among the most loyal. If they do this movie right, it will be huge--and preliminary reports suggest they did this right.

As a loyal trekkie I can't wait! Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

It was good. I'll need to see it again to fully develop an opinion.

*** may contain SPOILERS *****
so I've seen this thing last night. and it was AWESOME. yes! it rocked and kicked some serious ass. I was truly excited like a kid, hours before, during and after the movie. and when only at the end of the film the original Star Trek music (and the opening monologue) appeared I was in tears. okay, I'm exaggerating a bit but it was thrilling! I've been a Trek fan since the beginning of the 70es. I was maybe 7 or 8 years old when I catched my first short scene on TV, it was Kirk silently sneaking around the corner with a phaser gun, hell I'm not even sure which episode this was but that picture remains branded in my vision forever. then for months I used to beg mummy so I could stay up late once a week to see this. I grew up and over years and decades watched the reruns, enjoyed new series, spin offs and countless movies, some were great, some utter shite, but I always loved the whole thingy and followed closely. now the last movies sucked, and on TV Enterprise was cancelled after season 4 (for me probably one of the best seasons during the whole four decades of the franchise) and I was shattered. was this the end? it seemed so. now along comes JJ and prepares the relaunch much hyped and anticipated over years. and now it's here. so could he deliver? Yes, he could. this movie delivers on all levels, emotion, humour, action and stunning visuals. MANY lovely details references to the past as a treat for hardcore fans, but many new impulses as well (Uhura and Spock! ). this is the fastest ST movie ever, you get more action in two hours than in all previous 10 flicks combined. and sure, many Trekkies will bitch about this "That's not Star Trek". or bitch about other things. yadda yadda it was so much better in the old times gna gnah gnah. but hey, no one takes AWAY the old episodes and movies, they are still there for everyone to enjoy. so why NOT do try something new? some might have prefered to let the franchise rest in it's grave after such inglorious downfall. okay. fine. but IF you decide to do a relaunch in the first place, then you should go ALL the way. and I can't see how this could have been done better. suggestions? like what, no new unknow actors, but CGI animated clones of young Shatner and Nimoy?? Nahhh! this is 2009 and not the sixties anymore. JJ lifts Star Trek into the new millenium. my 10 year old son saw Wrath Of Khan two weeks ago and yes he kinda liked it. this new one could turn him into a Trekkie. so I will NOT allow him to watch it LOL I've seen the future and it will be... fascinating Live long and propser . . Never did become a trekkie, I see it as being a soap opera in space with a slight twist. I'm further into Star Wars but in saying that, I will watch the new movie when it's released on dvd because a friend of mine plays the role of one of the main characters.

I'm no Star Trek fan, and J.J. Abrams is just... eh, but it's nice to have what will likely be a blistering sci-fi success for a change.
Now if only we could get one insanely smart horror film to blow us all away these days. Abram's Cloverfield was fair -- I'd even call it good -- but it didn't pack the wallop I'd hoped for. [Edited 5/8/09 5:51am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

NUTS. otherwise totally loved the movie I think with a different director the movie could have totally blown me away. For now, I had a good time, but aside from Urban (the guy playing McCoy) the other performances were kinda annoying. He was the only one that didn't feel like I was watching an impersonator, except for Uhura, she just didn't even try. I imagine her direction was "look hot, OK folks I'm JJ Abrahms let's make a reference to my other crap!". Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. I loved it! And I'm not even really a fan. Though it was very well done.
They did a smart thing with the time-loop and freed themselves up from 40 years worth of continuity and can pretty much do what they want with future films without all the nit-picking of "That can't happen because character X already met character Y in galaxy Z in episode Q." Although I'm sure the Star Trek purists are having a fit about it anyway. Oh, and that new Kirk sure can fill out the front end of a pair of boxer-briefs.
