Just for the record....I love that beautiful little children in the white house wear their hair in all the styles they can--everything from straight to twisties to afro puffs. That endeared me to them more. I think its the children that will set new fashion trends.....look what happened to J. Crews site just because they wore some items.

IMO - Yes...
Because they're considered powerful women in the US of A
and alot of ppl look up to the things they do, no matter how small.
Plus the media will feed it to the masses so much and the masses are already so strung up on wat the media has to say anyway.
So...yes.
I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

Unfortunately I dont believe the USA is ready for a black woman of Power with Natural hair. Black America would need to be comfortable with viewing our hair as non political before that could happen.

Michelle yes, maybe even Oprah, but really its not about a trend. Women have been wearing their hair natural for ever, it is a personal choice that I feel we really don't need a role model for.

For me it is maturity and health reasons. Plus if I had all that money I have spent on Perms for the last 30 years eek

love

look at her pearls.
That's a good point and really I think that the politicization( is that even a word lol) of hair stems back to the 70's when we were as a people concerned with taking our identity back, however maybe I am too old and have lost the pulse of this one, but I thought it wasn't so political anymore? I know that dreds have that spiritual context to them still but with all the weave and wigs and sew in this and glue in that do you really think it matters politically still?

Imago

I would imagine Michelle Obama could shave her head, and then 'bald' would be all the rage.

But Oprah, under no circumstances should go natural. No lawd, she needs the latex, rubberbands, and layers of MAC makeup to keep her face on right. Lawd.

Maybe you misunderstood. I wasn't talking about length of time here only. Pook's pretty well-liked here so I'm surprised by what you said. Maybe it'll be borne out in how this thread does as far as post count and by whom. Are you sure it wasn't something during the course of his thread that lead to the locking?

Pook is indeed well-liked here but, even though I really like him, I have to admit that SCNDLS is right. There was a lot of baiting, subtle racism and stereotyping going on, mainly directed at black people and Muslims.
I wouldn´t say that I felt deeply offended though, he didn´t insult anybody ( the posts or threads were rather a bit ignorant or biased in nature but not necessarily harmful or malicious).
I didn´t feel offended...but I would understand if some folks felt offended.

This thread is interesting though....at least for non-Americans. How can hair carry such political weight ? This would be a non-issue in any other country.

Yah unfortunately as unintentional as some of these threads are, they tend to attract the usual round of suspects. They get off on twisting the subject matter all around to suit themselves and discredit the motives of others.

It hasn't only been black hairstyles that have had political or social meaning, but that is what the thread's about, so carry on. smile

More and more black women are going natural; I've been trying to find the exact article that I read on this last year but am having some difficulty

You should check out my nappy hair appreciation thread

Oprah, eh...I'd be impressed. If Michelle did it, I'm sure some women would be breaking their necks to to the big chop and go natural. I'm already rockin my natural hair and I love it.

It's better than spending money on the salon that I barely have, though. It costs me about 22 bucks to get my hair done. 3 bucks for bobby pins, 9 for my natural hair pomade, and a combined 8 for my shampoo.
