Muggings

So a couple of days ago a lady who lives just across the street got mugged. It was 4pm in the afternoon and in this very street a motorbike with two masked guys on it sped up, one jumped off and brandished a gun (probably a toy or air gun, but still), and got her to give him her money and jewelry. This follows the same thing happening to someone just around the corner from here a few weeks ago.

It's kinda freaked me out. I mean, the middle of the afternoon and they're doing that shit in broad daylight, and just a hundred yards from our doorstep. We walk around here all the time, to the shops, to local restaurants, to the market, and Mon usually takes a walk or rides the bicycle once or twice a day to the market by herself. Now I worry for her safety. I'm thinking if I'm walking alone or with Mon it'll be more of a target too, since they'll figure a foreigner will have more money on them.

It's messed up. What can we do to protect ourselves?

It's not purely because of this, but I'm thinking about buying an apartment a little further into the city. Our little village idyll is rapidly disappearing. sad

I would beat the living shit out of those two guys.

And take the money from their wallets and look to see if Bangkok has a Toni & Guy.

I sure hope "fashion mullet" means the same thing in Bangkok as it does in Tampa, cause I will just kill myself if I end up with a hetero hairdo

good friend of mine was at an atm a while back.... 3 yound dudes (probably 18 or so)... came up to him and demanded money... one had a gun.... my friend's response?.. "get a fucking job"... they hassled him some more... and his response was the same... they eventually just left

he said for some reason he wasn't scared... he instantly thought 'no.. fuck you little punks'... crazy stuff

Do Thais do 'Neighborhood watch" ?

Maybe form a group like that? Or is that a foreign concept to them?

See, if I hadn't known about the muggings here and it happened to me I feel sure my response would be different. Now I can't stop thinking about it and pondering what I would do. Trouble is, in Thailand they like their knives so I'm not sure it would be a good idea to resist. Run, perhaps, but I'm usually wearing flip-flops and the missus high heels. We wouldn't look athletic and sexy AT ALL. confused

We have a Neighborhood Watch, yes. nod It's my turn with it next week. It's only a fake Gucci, but still. shrug

disbelief

Ok, no we don't. Thais are naturally nosy though, to the point of rude as hell staring with absolutely no shame or self-consciousness. I don't know if that helps at all.

I think I feel the same.

We have a motorbike taxi guy we call pretty often to pick us up and take us to places locally. I'm thinking we'll just call him every time one or both of us is going any further than the corner. Maybe I'm worrying more than I need to though?

It doesn't help if that doesn't encourage muggings. lol

Several years back a friend of mine here was drunk and couldn't get back into the house through the front gate so he climbed over the wall. Unfortunately it was the wall to the wrong house. He got severely beaten. I think the police might've been more sympathetic if he were Thai but as it was they just said 'sum num naa'!

What's the police detail like in your 'hood, Nick? Are there more officers and patrol cars out now?

lol

In the city there are little police booths at junctions and on the expressway all over the place, with police roaming about or on their bikes. Out here we only see the police at the end of each month out on the main roads stopping trucks and bikes to inspect them in order to get their 'tea money'.

You're 'hi-so' too, and 'luuk khrung'! You've got it made. I expect to see you sipping Coke in slow-mo or smiling manically and tapping a beat over-enthusiastically on a tube of Pringles on my TV very soon!

Sorry to hear. Unfortunately it can happen at anytime, anyplace.

A friend of mine was in Bangkok most recent and he and his boyfriend were held at knifepoint by their (so called) tour guide. The guide initially offered his services outside their hotel and he drove them out of town and threatened to stab and leave them on the side of the road if they didn't hand over all their money. The worst part was they had a similiar incident occur 2 weeks later in Vietnam but were more prepared for it. neutral
