But it also made me laugh because I have grown up with Velveeta, Satan (pronounced sah-tahn), Margarita, Alize, LaTasha, LaTisha, Veroniqua, Shampelle, and fifteen different spellings of Nakia, including Nekqui'aa. It'd be funnier if it weren't so sad. What do stupidly-named children do when they grow up? Who's going to hire Toprameneesha for a professional position? Those doing the hiring will have a good laugh at the name on her resumé - before it ends up in the circular file. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I've seen plenty of unusually-named people in professional positions. Like others have said, Shaterica (medical assistant at my doctor's office) is really no stupider than Dottie Jo (co-owner of a local gym). The Normal Whores Club

As someone who's worked in HR for 10 years, as has my mother for 25 years, we've both witnessed hiring managers throw the resumes of those with "ghetto" names in the trash. It happens all the time.

Some things aren't funny to me regardless of whether a black or white comedian says it. People's personal experiences definitely "color" what they find amusing and not. That's why we all have different tastes. I just don't think it's all that funny. No biggie.

On the flipside of this, it really irks me when parents have absolutely no imagination when naming their kids. My name is Kerry and I went to school with no less than 7 other Kerry's... 5 of them were in my Maths class I swore up and down that I would NEVER name my kids with a 'beige' name, one that a stack of other kids would have, so that they could stand out on their own... now don't get me wrong, I didn't go mad, my girls are Faye and Elsa, which are slightly unusual without sounding made up, but at least they're distiguishable from the sea of Lilly's, Emma's, Evie's, Olivia's... etc I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

I hear ya cuz here in Texas in da 'burbs the plethora of "vanilla" names, among blacks AND whites, include Madison (2 among my family/friends), Grace (3 among my family/friends), Parker, Preston, Elijah (2 among my family/friends), Jordan/Jordin, Jett, Payton/Peyton and the list goes on to infinity. No imagination. There must be a balance, damn.

Every community has its' share of odd or questionable naming practices. A lot of Native folks are prone to giving their kids either "western" names like Shane and Dallas, or the kids get saddled with old-fashioned names. I happen to know personally a 15 year old named Edith. You try being a high school student in 2009 named Edith and see if you don't get made fun of for it. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

The unfortunate thing is, parents don't realize when they name their children obviously "ethnic" sounding names, it sets them up for adult life. Countless studies have been done that reveal that when HR and possible employers see resumes with names such as these, they are passed up for interviews twice as much as people with names like Meliss or Jason or something.
I may catch hell, BUT with the exception of the standard deviation, it happens. Boyfriend and I are in agreement now. He has already said I'm not setting my child up. Race is such an issue in America and I'm not going to make it harder or even make their race stand out on paper too.

I'm familiar with the so called ghetto black names. Thank god
no one in my immediate family has them. I hate any name with quan or isha in it. I notice a lot of white kids with last names for first names like Hunter and Connor. Don't laugh at my funk
