Can someone talk to me about the Dallas Ft Worth area

I might be moving down there & I have some anxiety. Im from the midwest. I live just north of Ft Wayne Indiana. Dont like tornadoes. Worried how redneck this is going to be.

Are my fears ligit or unfounded?

Unfounded. You can find "rednecks" anywhere you go (aka hicks or stupid people). You deal with them the way you'd deal with anyone who rubs you wrong. Walk away.

Tornadoes, well yes there are a few there. I'm from Oklahoma, where we invited tornadoes and humidity. However, it seems tornadoes usually hit the country or outer areas of town, not in the center of town. HOWEVER, that's not a solid statement, and we know weather can hit anywhere at any time. I lived in the middle of OK City for the first 18 years of my life and although we were in the cellar for tornadoes, none ever hit us, or even close. Wind damage yes, but never a tornado. The first time I ever SAW a tornado was when I was 22, and living up in Tulsa. It was hanging in the sky about 4 miles from me and was as big as anything. Luckily it was moving away from me. I've never suffered tornado damage, nor as my family. My aunt lived in Moore, OK (an OKC suburb) when the big tornado of May 1999 hit, and even she wasn't damaged on her house, or her business a couple of miles away. But it's a chance you take.

Texas is big, has a lot to offer, especially the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. North Dallas is very nice, upscale, etc. (My friend owns a nice home in North Dallas, aka The Colony, TX.) You're also in a major city for concert tours, and within driving distance to Corpus Christi (the gulf), Austin and even up to Oklahoma or Arkansas (the Ozarks, etc). It's not a cowboy redneck area, esp in the city. It's a very modern city, despite their former governor.

Fear of the unknown is normal. Letting it control you, is not.

I should have been more specific by telling that I will be moving to Lewisville.

I live in Norman, Oklahoma, just south of Oklahoma City! I enjoy going into the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I think you will like it.

Cool. Good to hear we have another DFW transplant. Lewisville is pretty nice. It is close to the airport, has lots of nice shopping and you are only about 30 minutes from the OK border and gambling. I'll get more detailed later.

I know you've been in Oklahoma long enough, because I bet you say "than" like any other Okie..."then" which leads to the wrong spelling. lol

I know, but my joke was in your statement you said "I'm more of a Cornhusker THEN a Sooner", and it should be "THAN".

I do still say ya'll, but not like I'm on Hee Haw or anything. It's a weird juxtaposition between saying "ya'll" and also using the NY accent to say "kawfee".

If it makes you feel any better, we don't get a lot of tornadoes in this portion of Texas. There are tornadoes that hit in north Texas, but it's mostly in the "flat" portions. You will get lots of wind, though. You will also have to get used to our triple digit heat. Other than that, you will find that we get a little of everything around here. From snow, ice, rain, sleet, and HEAT!!!

Get ready for everything Cowboys and Mavs. No matter how horrible the teams may be, everyone seems to back them. The Rangers are irrelevant. The Stars are also pretty big.

The worse thing about Lewisville is probably the I-35E traffic. It is bad about 70 percent of the time.

I hope you enjoy living here. You won't encounter too many "redneck" or "hick" mentality people around here. Especially in Dallas. If you go toward Forth Worth and northern Tarrant County and parts of Denton County, you would see some, but not enough to make a big deal out of.

I live in Killeen, Tx which is about 2hours from Dallas. I happen to like the area minus the traffic. As with all areas there may be certain sections you would want to avoid. However, all in I like it. I have seen Prince, Celine Dion (wife), Erykah Badu, King Tut exhibit there. There is always something going on!!!!

Dallas has some really HOT nightlife spots. You'll be fine! Way more cosmopolitan than damn Ft Wayne.

The South isn't all like what you see on TV. It has its spots, but a city like Dallas? You crazy. I would only want to be careful on the highways in between the big cities. wink

That's true. We don't ride horses to work or wear big cowboy hats and wranglers all of the time. lol
