CONTRACTING HIV from unprotected sex? OK,
What are the chances of contracting HIV from unprotected sex? I read somewhere that it was like 3 chances in 1000, which seems low but when you're dealing with billions it's pretty high. But is it just 3 chances in 1000? That just seems rediculously low. And what are the chances of it through giving oral? receiving oral? Being the 'top' during anal or vaginal Being the bottom during anal or being on the receiving end during vaginal?

It has a lot to do with genetics, actually. I'm sure you already know this, but there are populations who are more at risk due to where their ancestors are from. Not unlike the malaria resistance / sickle cell trade-off. I can't remember the specifics, but a biology instructor of mine made some mention of the descendants of Black Death survivors. Those in that gene pool aren't as susceptible. Oh shit, my hat done fell off

there are too many things to worry abuot like micro fissures, amount of virus in the body fluids in question, general health of the person, genetics, there are people who will never catch it, to give you an honest answer.
if you don't want it wrap it up. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Anyone not wearing a condom in 2009 with a casual affair is a plum stupid idiot. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

What about if they're married?

This is all extremely personal (emotionally and genetically) and I would hope that this is nothing more than a discussion and no one goes out there making a choice on what the read on a thread at the Org.
...just sayin. If you're truly concerned with contracting anything, regardless of love and commitment, there are only 2 choices: Celibacy and Condoms.

What about if they're married? Yes. That too. Unless you accept the risks at hand and accept that you are partly responsible if something should happen. Unpopular stance. I already took it on another thread a while back for this. [Edited 5/11/09 14:56pm]

I just wanted to know what the actual statistics are broken down by category. I'm a numbers guy. I have friends who are affected by these conditions and I hope and pray in their lifetimes, we'll see an end to them. I'm different from most in that I believe all current STDs will be eliminated by the end of this century, mainly because I believe that the world's shrinking population will continue to shrink at an excellerated pace, thereby alarming major industrialized nations to do everything they can to stabilize the populations and thus their workforce/economies. It won't be an altruistic act by any means, but I believe we're going to see an end to these diseases, and many forms of cancer before the end of this century. However, in the meantime, I agree with you...condoms or celibacy. The purpose of this thread was merely to indulge my need to know the numbers. Those of you reading this, I second johnart's sentiments.

I've got no numbers for you, Dan, but here is an ordinal ranking of particular acts by the Canadian Public Health Association (http://www.cpha.ca/en/portals/hiv/transmission/faq05.aspx)
No risk These are acts that present no risk of HIV transmission because there is no exchange of body fluids and no transmission of HIV has been documented: * French kissing when no blood is present (saliva is not a body fluid that can transmit HIV) * Masturbating (oneself or someone else) * Using a sex toy and not sharing it. Negligible risk These acts present some risk of HIV transmission because they lead to an exchange of body fluids. However, the amount of fluids and the way they're exchanged seem to make transmission less likely, and no transmission of HIV has been documented. Negligible-risk acts include: The following oral sex activities: * Fellatio (mouth on penis) given with a condom * Fellatio received with or without a condom * Cunnilingus (mouth on female genitals/vulva) given with protection (can be made by cutting a piece of condom or using a dental dam) * Cunnilingus received with or without protection * Anilingus (mouth on anus) given or received with or without protection * Digital penetration (finger in anus or vagina), with or without a latex glove. * Manual penetration (hand in anus or vagina), given or received with or without a latex glove. * Sharing a sex toy using a new condom for each person * Sharing a properly-disinfected sex toy. Low risk These acts present a risk of HIV transmission because they lead to an exchange of body fluids that can transmit HIV. Infection cases have been documented for acts like: * Fellatio given without a condom (when semen or pre-ejaculatory fluid is present) * Cunnilingus given without protection (whether during menstruation or not) * Vaginal penetration with a condom (risk exists for both partners) * Anal penetration with a condom (risk exists for both partners). * French kissing when blood is present. High risk These sexual acts present a risk of HIV transmission because they lead to an exchange of body fluids that can transmit HIV. Many infections cases have been documented and many studies have consistently shown a link between these acts and HIV infections: * Vaginal penetration without a condom (risk exists for both partners * Anal penetration without a condom (risk exists for both partners) * Sharing a sex toy that was not disinfected, without a condom. if you hook up with someone and use protection and you are faithful to her and she's faithful to you. at what point do you stop using protection? I guess what I am trying to say is you never know a persons true history so no matter how much or how long you use protection this person could already be carrying but just haven't been detected yet.

SCNDLS your first reply looked like you were having an affair with a married person and asking if it was okay or not to use a condom - as if that married person you were with was safe. I ran a marathon for AIDS once, raised a bunch of money - and now AIDS is bigger than ever.

Umm, when is that NOT present?? I'm assuming that means when the act is not completed, though miniscule traces of pre-ejaculatory fluid often still are present. Perhaps the assumption is that those traces are so tiny as to present no real threat of transmitting the virus. I think I'd still assume some risk, though. No harm in that.
