18 minute video interview: Zachary Quinto (Spock) + Chris Pine (Kirk)

[Edited 5/10/09 10:44am]

okay, I liked the movie, but I don't think I'm going to sit through an 18 minute interview with those two.

unless they start making out or something. or have a "sword fight" halfway through.

lol

Oh yeah!!!!!

I watched the movie last night. There was one part that got a little silly for me. I was like, "..is this a comedy." But it was great on the action and eye candy. Simon Pegg was soooo funny. I forgot he was in it. Spock and Kirk, HOTTTTT!!!!! So was Bana and his cohort (see my thread on favorite new actor).

I thought I was the only one that notice the whole boxer thing too. Kirk never looked so good walking in profile. (bouncety bounce bounce)

The alternate universe thing is tricky though. Like how comes Captain Pike was made an admiral before he meets those butt-head people in TOS, (Menagerie episode)? That's how he became an invalid and I didn't see the need to change that for the story. I also don't know why they had to kill off Spock's mother when she outlived his father in TOS? couldn't they have used another plot device to provoke Spock's emotional outburst?

Since Pike's first mission was a direct result of Nero's interference, all other subsequent missions for all of the characters are now open and unwritten.

As for Amanda Grayson (Spock's mother), she died long before Sarek (Spock's father). Sarek chose to marry another human later on (Perrin) who was the one who visited the Enterprise-D with him in "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Perrin outlived him, but she was much younger than he as well.

I agree about Chekov. I was waiting to hear what you thought about Spock? I wasn't sure the actor would be able to brush off the Sylar character but he pulled it off nicely IMO.

I think that Zachary did a great job n I didn't have any problem with him, as I stated earlier I have more of an issue with how Spock is now being written. Even with the alternative timeline in play I think that Spock would have still been raised and embraced the Vulcan side like the original series. Nero's first appearance which shaped the new kirk's life most likely did little to Spock's. He should even when attending starfleet academy be more true to his vulcan non emotional upbringing. Though as I said earlier the writers seem to want this new spock to be more emotional and conflicted. Though that goes against the original premise of the 3 main characters, Kirk, Spock n McCoy,being the parts of the human experience.

Yeah, it seems to me the whole point of Spock's embrace of logic vs. emotion was a counter balance to Kirk's more impulsive nature in TOS which created an interesting tension between the two characters. A more Vulcan portrayal of Spock in the movie would have also made the emotional breakdown scene even more dramatic, so I agree.

That said, Zach did nail it.

I didn't even recognize her. Then, after the movie, I asked my companion if she wasn't supposed to be in it and he said she played Spock's mother. Oh, okay. biggrin

I didn't recognize sexy Eric Bana from Hulk either. And then, after the movie, my companion told me he played the villain. Oh, okay. biggrin

Having watched it again, Im totally impressed with Karl Urban. Not only does he almost come off as McCoy he just looks so different than he did in Lord of the Rings.

Hes got character actor written all over him.

I will be honest, while I enjoyed the film, being a long time star trek fan I thought the alternative timeline was way to easy to mess with the canon and get away with it. I'd have been more impressed if jj. abrams created a movie that fit into the canon.

I don't see any reason why this would not fit into the canon? I mean all "mirror" episodes do, no? so does any messing with the timeline we've witnessed over 4 decades or all other billions of parallel universes out there. JJ's universe is just one of them

btw, in the upcoming sequels they still have the chance to do some crossovers to the main timeline, or even to restore it completely, though I rather prefer to NOT see this happen
