The alternate universe thing is tricky though. Like how comes Captain Pike was made an admiral before he meets those butt-head people in TOS, (Menagerie episode)? That's how he became an invalid and I didn't see the need to change that for the story. I also don't know why they had to kill off Spock's mother when she outlived his father in TOS? couldn't they have used another plot device to provoke Spock's emotional outburst?

Even with the alternative timeline in play I think that Spock would have still been raised and embraced the Vulcan side like the original series. Nero's first appearance which shaped the new kirk's life most likely did little to Spock's. He should even when attending starfleet academy be more true to his vulcan non emotional upbringing. Though as I said earlier the writers seem to want this new spock to be more emotional and conflicted. Though that goes against the original premise of the 3 main characters, Kirk, Spock n McCoy,being the parts of the human experience.

As for Amanda Grayson (Spock's mother), she died long before Sarek (Spock's father). Sarek chose to marry another human later on (Perrin) who was the one who visited the Enterprise-D with him in "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Perrin outlived him, but she was much younger than he as well.

I thought it was really nice to see Wynona Ryder getting work again. She's been out of the movies for a really long time.

I will be honest, while I enjoyed the film, being a long time star trek fan I thought the alternative timeline was way to easy to mess with the canon and get away with it. I'd have been more impressed if jj. abrams created a movie that fit into the canon.

N just to be a total geek I loved the fact that Majel Barrett got to do the computer voice again.

Having watched it again, Im totally impressed with Karl Urban. Not only does he almost come off as McCoy he just looks so different than he did in Lord of the Rings.

Hes got character actor written all over him.
