Were you able to hold him as they did it? I know it sounds morbid but it's really nice to actually be there holding them, petting and comforting them as they just go to sleep.

I was glad to have been there when mine was put down. It was so hard, but I am glad I did it.

Anytime we've had to do it, we always both hold the dog and one of us (whomever the dog might be closest to) holds his/her head and look in their eyes while talking to them.

I understand what you are going through.
today, we found a stray that love very much.
he died under the house next to the stop where my bed would be.
i was very attached to him. as was he to me.
we buried him out on the lawn.

you'll get through it.
i am trying to.
i am trying to remember him, and it makes me happy that he died with people who he loved.
so remember the same.

I've just cried my eyes out reading this. I'm so sorry for you, losing my dog was one the hardest things I've been through. You're so brave to have been with him.
