Paedophiles are by and large men. But are there women paedophiles and if so why is it so invariably discussed?

The number of female paedophiles preying on children in care is much higher than previously thought with many of the abusers babysitters, nannies, nuns and teachers, a new study has found.

The report, by peak child protection group Child Wise, found female sexual predators are responsible for six per cent of all reported cases of sexual abuse against children, according to News Limited newspapers.

The study also found that while there was no definitive profile of female abusers, those known to have molested children were women in positions of authority, including babysitters and nannies and even nuns and teachers.

The research showed most females who abused children did so alone and that women were less likely than men to be prosecuted for their crimes.

The study, conducted over five years, was undertaken to determine how much sexual abuse was committed by women working with children.

Yep, there are some out there. When I was 13 I was at a bus stop on my way to school. A woman came up to me and asked me if I wanted to go to her house. She said that she would cook me breakfast and that we could talk.

I don't know if she was a paedophile but I felt really uncomfortable and strange. I'm sure that morning could have gone totally wrong if I would have gone with her.

Female school teachers included, having sexual relations with their students..

it's a sad double standard because paedophiles exist in both genders..
but, an example of a highly publicized one....

Having sex with teenagers is a bit different thing than abusing small children sexually. Calling that "paedophilia" is quite inappropriate.

As far as clinical literature from the last century goes there are apparently only a handful of known cases even on a global scale. A certain form of a female variation of the same psychic structure has sometimes been suggested to appear in the cases where the female has either killed her child or not allowed the child to integrate with the surrounding social order in a normal way (she has "kept the child to herself") - but it's more of a structural explanation based on the exercise on power than anything having to do with sexual contact.

I don't doubt that in some rare cases, for instance, drunken mothers would end up in sexual contact with their sons (you can sometimes read these type of confessions on the internet or on readers' letters columns on some papers - I've seen a few). But that's usually something that would require for the boy to be old enough too to be sexually motivated / physically capable to have intercourse with the mother.

Yes it's widely assumed in society that most pedophiles are males, but in fact there are many that are of female gender.

A friend of mine was a corrections officer in a female prison for a few years, and she said pedophiles and murderers dominated the population.
