Coverting Photography into Large print art?

I was thinking about converting some of my photos into wall art. I wanted to crop some photos and make them into kid of abstract art by manipulating some of my photos. I wanted to blow them up large images.

Has anybody ever done this? Is it easy, any tips? Is it easier just to manipulate it with photo software, save it to a disk, and then take it to a print shop to enlarge it?

I wanted to take a picture and make it look more like a painting verses a photo.I've been looking at buying some paintings for my home but I think most of the painting in stores are ugly and way over priced.

Any advice for some good photography software?

If you done it before can you post some examples of your work. The orignal photo vs final product.

first i will tell you that unless you have the finances to do it BIG, it will appear to be expensive

any print shop will usually print large format, but you have to do the scouting to see who has the best quality in large prints

they usually start from about 40$ and go up from there (i've printed no larger than 2ft x 3 ft so that gives you an idea)

other than that, it's in your hands
you have a variety of programs to choose from (photoshop, etc) to do what you need to do to be happy with said photo.

best of luck.

the biggest problem you're going to have is maintaining detail when enlarging that much.

nod and once you send the graphic in, unless you've pushed it to it's limit in quality, most print places won't do much else to the image.
