Have you been abroad and what were your observions? I have more travel titbits to share like the above gem. But lets hear yours. You? . [Edited 4/28/09 15:19pm] sure enough, travel broadens the mind. if i had never visited the ORG, i wouldn't know how McMeekle likes to take his haggis tea. one lump. no sugar.

'Does travel broaden the mind?'
That really depends on how you are travelling. You could travel to an exotic tropical paradise and spend 2 weeks on the beach sunbathing but that experience alone won't broaden your mind very much. You could also spend your time visiting places, talking to the locals and other travellers and you might just have some very mind broadening experiences. Recently I returned from Costa Rica. I travelled for a month across the country, met many great and not so great people and had mosty good and also some bad experiences. After a couple of weeks I gradually started to realise that travelling doesn't just broaden the mind by seeing and doing things you've never seen and done before, it deepens it too. Maybe even you could say that it reflects your life and personality. What you choose to do and the experiences you then have are a reflection of your life and who you are.

That's why I hardly ever did any travels booked with travel agencies or spent my time on beaches lying in the sun. When I last made a trip to a tropical island I stayed with a local friend in his house without electricity in the middle of the tropical rain forest and I had the chance to meet local people in their every day life. I learned a lot . With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

Let me just say, i'll be staying in Jakarta for most of the trip, it's just that Bali will be the highlight. so, yeah, i'm putting the work in, not just a trip to a beautiful "tropical beach or island". i'll be hanging with natives for the whole trip AND we will be going to a lot places that are usually off the tourist radar. just saying.

For example, I could've saved myself a lot of time, energy and money if I'd just googled "Are English people weird?". You can see in books but its not the same as being there. For example, I read that In Canada burping loudly in public is considered polite and showing your appreciation, but its not the same as seeing a person burp for real. . [Edited 5/2/09 5:01am]

Really? Because of the portion size? I wish I knew. Maybe it's because when I was there I was non-stop. I needed a vacation after my vacation.
