Volkswagens Love them? Hate them? Are they reliable? Expensive upkeep? Ride well? Overpriced?
Curious what current or previous owners thoughts are... Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I have a jetta right now, & previously owned a late model jetta before this current one. Overall I think they r reliable, reasonably priced, and have not found the upkeep cost 2 be anymore than an average sedan. I have found that when I do have a mechanical issue w/my VW I am better off taking it 2 the dealership for repairs as private mechanics r clueless as to how to work on VW's in general. The dealership is a bit pricey 4 repairs but they r quick and efficent.
I guess I really do like VW's as I have recently considered trading my jetta in for a VW Eos.

I’m considering a Jetta but am curious about the Tiguan and finally saw one in person just yesterday. Still undecided tho. When I first saw an Eos it made me do a double take. I didn't know what it was at the time but it caught my attention. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

My mom used to drive VWs for many years, the last one was a Jetta too. Also my sister had a VW Passat for some years as well as a Golf. Both were happy with their choices. But here in Austria VWs are very common, I think the Golf may still be the most common car of all. So contrary to the US we have loads of mechanics who are specialized on them. With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

If you want a Tiguan, I would also consider a Mercedes MLK or Volvo SC60. To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.

I was going to go buy a 1974 455 Super duty Trans Am, but then I saw they go for $80,000 and up! May have to save awhile for that!
In the meantime, I've always wanted one of these:

My best girlfriend has owned many Jettas and recently bought the Touareg and raves about it. VWs seem like good, reliable cars with the trademark German penchant for engineering and simplicity but practical design. I would buy one.

I bought a 1990 jetta gli a couple of months ago. I LOVE IT! no major problems, it's got over 183k miles on it, runs like a champ.

my gf has a 1997 Jetta or thereabouts. It's a nice car, even though it's older, but it constantly seems to have a new rattle or broken part.
My 1995 Corrolla seems to be a lot more reliable, but not nearly as pleasant a ride. My Legacy

i have a 93 vw cabriolet ... love it . still drive it ... it has 203K on it ...
http://www.geocities.com/...rgandy.jpg that is a pic of my exact car . (cant believe it was on this website lol) i want to get a diesel jetta but i havnt found one i like ... vw went thru a couple of bad years ... they seem to be moving up ... getting more reliable etc . I had a 91 jetta and hated it ... when i bought my 93 cab i swore if it was like the 91, i wasnt gonna buy another one ... i was reluctant to get a 5 cylinder car (current gas jettas etc) but they seem to be holding up well (from what i read) Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

Thanks everybody! Sounds like folks really like their VWs. I think the mileage on the Tiguan might be a deal breaker for me so the Jetta might win out especially with the TDI option.
I like that owners seem to keep their VWs for many years. [Edited 4/28/09 12:42pm] Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I know that this is a VW thread but I have to say that I love love love my HONDA CIVIC EX. I swear, I have had no major problems with this car. 170,000 and I bought it in 2002.
There's a really cute VW that I saw. It's a 2 door. I can't remember the model. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! We want cigar puffing men that look like they wanna beat the living daylights out of us" Val"sporking is spooning with benefits"

FYI
VW AUDI Porsche Bugatti Lamborghini Bentley are all the same company. they share parts and technology. VW quality will always be on par with the rest of that line up. what more could anyone ask for in that price range? To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.

My late best friend had a white convertible beatle, 1942 or 1943. It was awesome. It was a clothes hamper in the garage for the last 5 years of its life.
I really wanted him to fix that car up. It was awesome when it ran. MyeternalgrattitudetoPhil&Val.Herman said "We want sweaty truckers at the truck stop! We want cigar puffing men that look like they wanna beat the living daylights out of us" Val"sporking is spooning with benefits"

Didn't know they did that one too. Jettas are pretty cheap compared to what they used to be but I'm not sure if I'm crazy about the new style. I saw blue metallic Eos that had me drooling. Might have to reconsider... Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I really wanted him to fix that car up. It was awesome when it ran. I didn't know they went back that far! I think it originated in the 30's. My ex mother-in-law explained to me that it was originally created as a Porsche knock-off (with Porsche involved) to make good cars affordable to the everyday everyman, hence the name Volkswagen, which means "people's car" in German. There is a car collecting place near my old apartment where some dude restored some from the 50's or 60's I think. He calls them his Volkswagen "old timers"

When I was a little kid I used to swear I wanted a Volkswagen Rabbit.
Nowadays, I more lean towards a Mini Cooper or Smart Car.
