GeoCities is dead. RIP GeoCities. Just announced; Yahoo is shutting down GeoCities.
http://news.cnet.com/8301...255-2.html I remember when I first got on the internet back in 1997. It was where I set up my first webpage. of course this was before really cheap webhosting services and long before MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Wordpress, and Blogger. The whole idea of GeoCities is quaint now, like going on AOL dialup, doing searches through Lycos and AltaVista, and having a WebTV unit for your TV.

Wow... I hadn't used GeoCities since like 1999! Did they still have themed "neighborhoods?" Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

geocities is/was oooold skool.
they were the first thing i played around with when i was teaching myself how to use HTML and when i was making whatever you want to call blogs before they were blogs, but the pages were kind of cumbersome and annoying with the pop-up ads and whatnot. it's a bit of nostalgia washed away, but it was good for what it was good for.

Same here Geocities was kind of like the MySpace of the late 90's, in a way. Garish designs dominated both., and no matter how much work you'd put into your pages, they never looked *quite* finished. Me too. I haven't thought of FortuneCity in a long time. My first websites were basically just a bunch of animated GIFs (too many..but I thought it sooo cool at the time) and a little bit of text. And horrible colors!

It really added something to my (excessive) usage of animated graphics.

I had a page on Geocities in 1997 when I was learning HTML too. Sounds like a lot of people had that experience.
Oh well, that was 12 years ago, time to let it burn.

But honestly, what is going to happen with all of the sites? I have 3 websites up with GeoCities that I created about 8 years ago. Will they just be terminated or what?

I guess there is a group that is trying to archive them all, but if they miss anything it's gonna be lost when Yahoo pulls the plug. Facebook, I haz it - https://www.facebook.com/Nikster1969
