Does anybody know about Transitional Sunglasses? I was thinking about getting some transitional sunglasses for times when I'm tired of wearing my contacts. For those who are unfamilar with the term transitional sunglasses, they are regular glasses that turn dark in sunlight. I was always told that they don't get dark when you are driving your car unless you have your sunroof open or windows down. I was always told that UV light doesn't penetrate glass. UV light is what is supposed to make your glasses turn into sunglasses in the sun.
Does anybody own a pair or know if they have perfected the technology?

I have to disagree with them being great. I have them and Im not too happy with them. They are not dark enough for me when I drive, I have to have a clip on set on as well or I get a bad migrane soon after.
I wont be getting them again with my next presciption glasses. Everyone has their opinions and their likes/dislikes. But they arent for everyone. So jaimie if they arent dark enough for you(keeping the sun out of ur eyes) please invest in a clip on set. Good luck. Smurf theme song-seriously how many fucking "La Las" can u fit into a dam song

My glasses are supposed to be transition lens, but it seems like the optometrist gave my uncle a bootleg pair
They used to get dark (black), now the lens have turned yellow and get to a darker shade of yellow in UV rays. Now look like yellow-ish shades They were shipped down to me from the US. Isn't the sun in the US and the sun in the Caribbean the same sun? It's all cool but I jus hope they're still doing wat they're spose to be doin. I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

they're okay. they dont get that dark from your perspective but you will look like ur wearing dark shades to others. they revert back pretty quickly. in ultra bright sunlight you will still have to squint.

Does anybody own a pair or know if they have perfected the technology? I love my transitional eye wear.. will never wear anything but. My experience with transitional: No, the don't "darken" up inside (minus sunroof/down-window) a car on a sunny day. They do however tint just enough to keep the sun out of your eyes. I've gotten out of the car and though my glasses weren't tinted until I took them off. As far as them getting dark and/or all shades in between, I'm happy with how mine tint depending on the sun cast and seasons. Every once in a while I have to remove them because the don't lighten up as quickly as I need them but that's usually because I'm going into a place that's dark. I have two pair the first par I've had since 03 and my second pair I got last month. [Edited 4/22/09 8:49am]

I love mine.
They take a little bit to go back when I go back indoors, but still love 'em.

My dad had a pair of transitional sunglasses, and I never heard him complain about them, so I guess he liked them. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Mine won t be dark enough for when the sun gets stronger in the summer - but I live in London so I might not have to worry! It s a bit strange for me when I go back to the classroom to teach after being outside. I look like the Fonz up there in front of the students for a couple of minutes.
