So if Perez Hilton was a judge and he's now going around runnin his mouth that her answer on Gay Marriage cost her the crown...does that open things up for Miss California to contest (not that she will, but who knows) the outcome?

Judges are not really supposed to score on whether THEY agree with a contestants answer but how it was delivered.

Of course it happens, but they usually don't go on tv the next day saying they did so. confused

Well I think when she used the term "opposite marriage" she looked like an idiot.

lol
I don't think that necessarily makes her look like an idiot. I got that she meant same sex and opposite sex. It's easy to leave out a word, but I agree with you that it would probably be counted and hurt her technically.

There's nothing wrong with respectfully disagreeing with gay marriage. She didn't go up there and preach about hell to any body, she just said what she believes marriage to be.

I say kudos to her for expressing how she really feels and not catering to Perez Hilton of all people. Fat moron is running around telling anyone who'll listen about what a massive homophobe she apparently is. He was probably jumping for joy at all the free publicity the minute she said she doesn't agree rolleyes

Agreed. nod Whether she happens to be a closet homophobe or not. she was asked her views about gay marriage, and after hesitating at first she sort of artfully traversed the question by explaining that she lived in a country where people could presumably choose who they want to marry, but according to her personal beliefs marriage should be between the opposite sexes. Now that answer may certainly not be popular in a lot of circles, but it certainly wasn't the complete disaster that Miss teen South Carolina gave during her pageant.

While I disagree with her position on the issue, she put forth her opinion in a mature and respectful manner.

She does not deserve any criticism for that at all.

Purplesweat, I read your response as I was typing this, and you put it very well. I bet Perez Hilton wet his pants when she answered the question that way.

Let this be a lesson that this is why we cannot always trust what we see written from a computer keyboard without seeing a person's face, and hearing their actual voice to get a more accurate context of their statements.

Do I disagree with her stance? Absolutely. But when you view the tape of the response, i also find her mature and respectful as she disagrees, even if I do think her views are not instep with the times AT ALL.

...and for Perez to show up on Larry King and suddenly try to pass himself off as some quasi-intelligent spokesperson for public dignity and human rights to speak on this issue, as much vitriol as he's spewed to get to where he is on the Hollywood hierarchy? I'm sorry, that's laughable to me.

He has the tape posted on his site....as a media tie-in to his CNN Larry King Live appearance, of course bored2

I think Perez judged this whole thing wrong. I don't think she upset as many people as he thinks. Obviously, after the prop 8 vote, it's safe to say that there are those who definitely agree with her neutral Regardless, it seems that she was judged based on her answer being NOT what he would've liked it to have been. I even saw him on E!News earlier and he said "She should've answered...." eek How can you say how someone SHOULD'VE answered??!!?!?!?!? That is proof enough that he judged her unfairly.

Anywho, we have a new Miss America smile I don't know what her name is or what state she's from, because everyone keeps talking about the person who didn't win neutral That's gotta suck for Miss What's-her-face.

It's just her opinion. She was asked for it, and she expressed it quite politely and graciously. The recent Prop 8 vote in her state and the rather generous applause she received show she is far from alone.

I am not hating on Miss California. She expressed her opinion and we should respect that. If she would have said that she was all in favor of gay marriage and everything, she probably would have been slammed from the other side. She expressed her opinion and we move on. I am not mad at her. I just know that I will not be hanging out with her. My word!! The lady is a moron. Or is it moran. wink

I strongly disagree with her. But what I don't think many people realize is that most politicians, including our president feel the same way she does. They just "dress up" the language a little.

neutral What does that have to do with Miss America? It's not supposed to be about whether or not you agree with her. It's about whether or not these beautiful women can answer a question, without having much time to think about it; Can they formulate a response, quickly and respectfully. I think she did that.

Yes I know. You'll see that I previously supported her for giving an honest respectful answer... she didn't give a BS answer like most politicians do.

I was pointing out that even our president feels the same as she does. So I don't get people condemning her for giving her opinion without condemning everyone else that basically said the same thing... the only difference is that they said it in a much less straightforward manner.

I'm surprised they threw such a controversial question at her. Not fun, she would be hated either way she responded. What if she came out in support of gay marriage then won Miss USA? The pageant would probably be boycotted. Anyway, I don't think it's really fair to pin this entire issue on a Miss USA candidate. They're looking for a homegrown all-American girl with traditional values, yes? Like people have been saying, the unspoken value set behind such an event hardly supports civil rights, so why the surprise? It's a form of sabotage.

Besides...the question they gave to Miss North Carolina was something about whether she believed the government should use taxpayer money to bail out companies (uh...no?)

Miss California should have won just for being willing to play hardball, if you ask me

The problem I have with her response is the fact that she had to say "No offense to anybody out there"...whenever you have to throw that comment in there, regardless of the statement, joke, or whatever, you're already acknowledging that what you're saying (or are about to say) will offend someone...also, I'm curious as to which god she was referring to when she mentioned her beliefs....because the god that I, as a catholic, was raised to believe in demands modesty and piousness from women....so does she invoke her god BEFORE or AFTER the swimsuit, ass hanging out everywhere competition? Does her god not supercede all of these events that celebrate her PHYSICAL attributes? Could someone explain it to me, because I'm a little behind in my modern religious beliefs....me and the catholics parted ways after the whole "shame on you for having pre-marital sex, but just look the other way as we rape and sexually abuse boys" period....

**and no, the lower case "god" and "catholics" are not typos**

I didn't hear a single mention of god in her response. Did she say it somewhere else in the show? Or are you assuming that's the subtext? Otherwise how can you call her a hypocrite?
