My hair is naturally very thick and very curly. I used to relax it for years but then stopped when I was in my early/mid twenties and I don't think that I could ever go back to chemically processing my hair. I love my hair this way, even though it can be quite a task to control it at times.
When I was living in Louisiana I got two responses from people. The first type of response was facination to the point of being uncomfortable. The second type of response was that people thought it was fake and couldn't believe that someone of color could actually grow hair, nevermind thick curly hair. Now that I'm back home (Massachusetts), most people just kind of ignore it. Thick curly hair is pretty commonplace and most people straighten it. Regardless of if I was wearing my hair natural or not, I've always gotten interesting responses from the men I've dated. They make this big deal about the texture of my hair and the color of my skin, as if that is what ultimately makes me an attractive women. I find it hard to hear. It's nice to be considered physically attractive, but it's unsettling to realize that the man you're in a relationship with would not have looked at you twice if your hair was nappier or your skin was darker.

Not that I could ever grow locks like that, but even I feel pressure to keep the hair short 'n shit. Interesting question. My co-worker (female) decided to go natural and stopped perming her hair. Doesn't seem to bother anyone. We have nurses, and other professionals wearing their hair in locks and other natural styles. They keep it neat, so I'm glad people where I work don't seem to have an issue with the way hair is worn, as long as it's neat. We have an Indian (East Indian) physician who used to wear his hair in a ponytail when he was a fellow working with us. They hired him as a physician on our staff, once he completed his fellowship, but cut his hair short. I guess it depends on what position you hold in employment, that you feel comfortable wearing or according to the employer's dress code. I believe he felt patients may not take him seriously as an experienced physician, if he wore his hair in a ponytail, besides the fact that he is young. However, we do have a male, white nurse on staff that wears his hair in a ponytail but tied neatly, and doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I work in a professional environment where looking neat and clean is rather important. I'm just sure to always wear my hair away from my face and it really doesn't bother anyone. I think that regardless of your hair texture, wearing it out of your face/eyes look neater.

They told us our hair was "nappy" and we believed it and forgot the true meaning and origin of "our" hair. Now shut up and pay close attention to this natural shit:

It's funny how the good hair/bad hair deal also affects guys.
My family's Southern and our tree runs the gamut of hair types and skin tones. A cousin I grew up with has extremely straight hair and is a couple shades darker than me -- despite the relative light skin in my family (on our mothers' side), he gets his hair texture from his father's family. (My own hair was less straight and had to grow some before the curl would show up. I spent many a teenage evening putting water in it to try to coax out some New Edition-type waves. Because he and I were so close growing up, I was constantly around to hear people praise his hair, inside and outside our family. It wasn't until I went off to college, away from our family, that I learned to appreciate my hair's own goodness. Not because it wasn't so curly or was so soft -- but because it was what God gave me. Of course, it's funny how my family reacted when I started shaving my head. But that's another story...
