Sorry I do not find the video funny and I am not impressed by the laughter in the background as to the dog the laughter could come across as approval of the behaviour. The dog is food aggressive and needs to see a qualified animal behaviourists asap before it uses those teeth on a human or animal.

I find it completely hysterical, food aggressive issue aside 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Just about says it all. | |

I'd be more concerned that the dog had mental issues 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Don't we all? I'd chew my own leg if I wasn't such a lazy bastard.

Maybe he doesn't know it's his own foot? Some dogs react that way to seeing their own tails out of the corner of their eye. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Maybe the dog was either trained to do this or has mental issues. [Edited 5/5/09 16:22pm] I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

that dogs is actually having a petite mal seizure. My neuro professor found this video and showed it to us in class as an example of an atypical presentation of a petite mal seizure in a dog. Even the most food aggressive dog in the world is not going to attack his own foot.

So the dog is unaware he is doing that? well, sort of. He's conscious of what is going on but he's unable to control his actions in that situation.

I witnessed something similar to this behaviour last year in the shelter kennels. A dog with a large tail that was food aggressive would attack its own tail. All tests where done that included neurological testing, the "royal college veterinary surgeons http://www.rvc.ac.uk/QMH/Index.cfm" diagnosed as food aggressive. Two days before the surgery date to dock the dogs tail the dog attacked its tail over night (one of the kennel maids stupidly had given a kong over night) another kennel maid found the dog in a pool of blood at five in the morning. Dog rushed to emergency vet, sadly dog died. Necropsy was done, dog died of blood loss and a heart attack. I agree that some animals that do this may have neurological problems but some do not. If an animal shows extreme behaviour at only food time and not any other time then food aggression could be the cause. I may have jumped the gun on diagnosing on the above video but your neuro professor may have done the same thing as no one can truly diagnose by the short video footage above. I would have liked to have seen in the above video one of the people try to take the bone of the dog to see the larger picture. This was not the case so no one could fully diagnose. If this dog is still around I hope whoever own it gets this animal the professional help it so needs but I doubt they will as by the sounds of the laughter they come across as if it’s some sort of funny party trick the animal does.

They can and some do terrible damage. The extent of the self mutilation a dog can do to itself is shocking. Skin disease, cushings etc: they can chew, bite, rip their own fur out until they bleed they can even attack themselves out of frustration/anger. Even anal gland problems a dog can chew its back feet until they bleed. Boredom or frustration a dog can self mutilate.

Skin disease, cushings etc: they can chew, bite, rip their own fur out until they bleed they can even attack themselves out of frustration/anger. Even anal gland problems a dog can chew its back feet until they bleed. Boredom or frustration a dog can self mutilate. disease is the key word there. Cushing's does cause hair loss but it does not cause self mutilation. Dogs with Cushing's, hypothyroidism, and diabetes are more prone to developing skin infections, but they usually don't self mutilate. A dog who is bored may lick himself until he has a localized skin infection but he will not attack himself. A dog who is suffering, either from a severe dermatological issue, such as allergies, or neurologic issue or even pain will mutilate itself but that is due to the discomfort caused by the disease. Neurologic testing doesn't always pick up on seizure disorders and the like. Dogs who are perfectly normal on a neuro exam, even an extremely in depth one, can still suffer from microseizures. The dog that you mention in your previous post still could have been neurologically inappropriate in addition to being food aggressive. Most dogs, even those who are prone to self mutilation, do have some inhibition and do not mutilate themselves to the point of bleeding out. Furthermore, it's very odd that the dog bled out from it's tail of all places. It is also very rare for a dog to suffer from a cardiac arrest without some other underlying disease process, intoxication, or major organ damage. It sounds like something else was going on. Even when an extremely thorough work up is done, things still get missed. I currently work with shelter animals on a regular basis. It's a part of my job to do physical exams and adoptability assessments on shelter animals. I'm very familiar with food aggressive animals. Is it possible that the dog in the video is just food aggressive? Sure. However, the strange movement of his leg and his reaction to it look more neurologic than just aggressive. So many neuro diseases in animals get missed because they are so hard to detect. It's sad that someone would make a video of this animal for laughs when it's obvious that something, either food aggression, neurologic disease, or both, is wrong with this dog.

This dog is in need of some serious help, before it attacks someone.
That aside, I can't stop laughing. It's not the attack on the foot I'm finding amusing, it's the way the foot keeps trying to stealthily sneak up on the bone that is getting me. RIP

Agree yet some do mutilate. A dog who is bored may lick himself until he has a localized skin infection but he will not attack himself.
It depends on how seveir. Again some do. A dog who is suffering, either from a severe dermatological issue, such as allergies, or neurologic issue or even pain will mutilate itself but that is due to the discomfort caused by the disease.

The rcvs Queen Mother Hospital are one of the leading and respected Veterinary hospital worldwide that diagnosed, I personally would not doubt their expertise, they are the cream of the crop in their profession. Of course people can get it wrong but i would have though this and any other health problems would have come up on the necropsy report. Yet it is possible experts can get it wrong they are but human. Furthermore, it's very odd that the dog bled out from it's tail of all places. Lack of blood going through the chambers of a heart can induce heart failure and so can shock. Clear bill of health before death. Necropsy was done by the The rcvs Queen Mother hospital again we have no reason to doubt, yet they are but human. I currently work with shelter animals on a regular basis. It's a part of my job to do physical exams and adoptability assessments on shelter animals. I'm very familiar with food aggressive animals. It is possible but will either of us trully know by the small clip shown above, the answer is no. Even experts in the field would have trouble doing so. I help two shelters. We employ a numerous vets, vet nurses, behaviourist and kennel staff. If after a battery of test they do not find the cause they refer to those that are more knowlegable. We trust there judgment as they are more qualified than us. I've seen a number of neurological cases over the years some not detected others missdiagnosed, I do wonder how much they have suffered before coming to us, i hope not much It's sad that someone would make a video of this animal for laughs when it's obvious that something, either food aggression, neurologic disease, or both, is wrong with this dog.
I fully agree, its the way they are laughing at the dog that i find it heart breaking. Keep up the wonderful work your doing JasmineFire I know it can be so rewarding yet at times heart breaking Tonight I received bad news a beautiful well tempered 2 year old was diagnosed with Syringomyelia and mitral valve disease, we still hope someone will take her, bloody puppy farmer I wish someone would ban them .
