1 Pay off my home loans and any other debt.
2 Set up CDs for my nieces, nephews, and younger cousins to help with college expenses. 3 Do a new will and revocable trust. 4 Throw a huge party for my friends and family with an envelope with some cash at each seat. 5 Order the bimmer, pick it up in Munich then drive around Europe for 3 months. 6 Go to LA and spend some quality time with my Georgia peach who just finished her chemo. 7 Finish the media room and game room 8 Treat my homies to a trip to Panama. 9 I MIGHT get a lil shopping in. 10 Get my ass back to work cuz a $1 million dollars doesn't go as far as it used to.

1. Get a lawyer
2. Get a good accountant 3. Pay off your debt 4. Invest 5. Give to Charity (tax breaks!) 6. Do whatever you want with the rest! If it were more than a million I'd probably have 10 suggestions rather than 6!

$1 million isn't really enough to do anything with of any significance.

You should aim high. I'm going to be compared to Warren Buffet. That's how frugal I'll be. This sig is just a fig of your imago-neigh-shun

Your chest is high, sir. Just depends on what you wanna do i guess, when i look at it from me standpoint in the UK $1million is about 650,000 GBP. I could go travelling and buy some stuff i guess but as far as life changing.....not gonna be enough, weird because i was talking to a guy at work about exit strategies the other day and we are currently banking on needing a NET £5mil to make it viable..... shit but that is the way of the world, you can eat through 650k in no time.

This is not a fantasy question. In that case make it a billion.....but that is NOT the question.

Great question!
I'm very fortunate because I don't have any debt, but one of the first things I would do is share some of the money with my close family and close friends. I would arrange for a vacation with a large group of friends/family for 2 weeks somewhere warm and sunny. Hawaii perhaps. I would give some to the Herbie Fund and to charities that help impoverished women around the world. And, travel, travel, travel!!

Ex-Moderator | pay off my (comparably miniscule) debt
buy a modest condo for myself buy a car (I currently don't have one) figure out how best to help out my family with $ donate to a few charities take a year or so off to travel return to school full-time stash the rest away only 7 things. like others have said, $1 million just ain't what it used to be. |

Depends on the situation of the person who gets the money, but I think the best course of action is:
1) Pay off all debt (cutting all credit cards in the process) 2) Put about 6 months of living expenses into a money market account as an emergency fund 3) If you have a mortgage, pay it off in full 4) Any remaining money goes into good growth stock mutual funds Again, depending on the age of the person and their current financial situation the advice would be different

unfortunately no. i was trying to come up with 10 things, and in nyc, it would buy me a nice apartment in manhattan, and that would pretty much be the end of the million. Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

1. Pay the taxes of $350,000 which leaves me $650,000
2. Pay off debt 3. Fund college education for the kids 4. I'm out of money now, so I guess there's only 3 things I could do!

Exactly. Pay off debt, buy a somewhat decent house and car and it's all gone.
