I REALLY need to get this off my chest . . .

I'm up, can't sleep, my sinuses/allergies are kicking my ass, and the Sex and the City movie is on HBO. As much as I loved the series, this movie PISSED me off with the message it sent to women. pissed

My major beefs with this BULLSHIT are:

#1: How the fuck did Big weasel outta the wedding because he couldn't reach Carrie on the gatdamn phone??? What's this dumb shit about "I need to know it's still us . . . just you and me"???? It'll BE us as soon as you show your punk ass up at the end of the fucking altar, muthafucka! I didn't get this bullshit at ALL and it's irritating that this supposed BIG shot mofo would bitch up cuz he couldn't talk to her when common sense would tell you she's getting ready to marry your dumb ass and maybe just a lil busy. Um, no. hammer

#2: After six seasons of selling women on being self-sufficient and independent PLUS all the bullshit she went through with Big, she takes him back in the end. whofarted That's some straight up bullshit and any woman that would take him back after being stood up in couture is one dumb bunny and I can't believe the writer would position this mess as a "happy" ending. rolleyes No wonder women are fucked up in the romance department.

I really feel insulted, betrayed, hoodwinked, bamboozled and like Plymouth rock landed on US behind this BULLSHIT. My face was like this confused eek from the wedding until the end of this bullshit.

Okay, thanks, I'm good and I think I can sleep now. thumbs up!

It's funny U say that, because I only watched until they landed in Mexico. I was SO PUT OFF by the wedding scene! omg I was going to attempt to watch the rest ON DEMAND after work today... hmph!

It didn't matter if he stood her up in a bathrobe or a couture dress, tho. He did her PLAIN WRONG. After 10 years, if he didn't want to get married, he shouldn't have let it get that far.

But U're right- the message was that we're just desperate to get married...
(did U notice the point of mentioning she was a 40-year-old bride?!) confused

Your lies, they cut me.

And #3:

After Miranda fessed up about the offhand comment she made to Big that had her guilt-ridden for months, Carrie has the nerve to blame Miranda for "ruining her marriage!" I guess Big standing your dumb ass up didn't have anything to with it. rolleyes Bitch, please! talk to the hand

I knew they'd somehow make the movie seperate from the television show in terms of female empowerment.

It seems the media are too scared to put realistic feminism on the big screens, it has to be the "acceptable", usually "male obsessed" version of feminism most live by today.

It's like the TV show will get it's little fanbase and that's fine, that'll keep it on TV no problem, but when it's a big movie, with lots of money and companies at stake, they have to go with the watered down, foolproof option at the cost of alienating thinking fans of the show like you and me. We're already fans, they don't need to worry about losing us, we'll just go back and watch the series instead. Newcomers won't.

I remember reading somewhere Vivienne Westwood walked out of the cinema after ten minutes because she "thought it was going to be about fashion". THAT'S the kind of mentality we're dealing with here and that's the mentality the big businesses aim to cater to because it equals $$$$. Though it seems the movie was too "high concept" for Westwood lol Heaven forbid she'd have to think while watching a chick flick!

Why do you think Confessions of a Shopaholic is doing so well? There'll be some pseudo-feminism in that movie too, and Bride Wars, and He's Just Not That Into You and Out of Town. But ultimately, they're all the same story/plot/characters with different stars and different titles.

At the very least, newcomers to the Sex and the City movie will be exposed to women like Samantha and Miranda for the first time which has to count for something.

Just watched the movie over the weekend and felt the exact same way you did on every single point. I couldn't believe she took Big back. Also couldn't believe she directed her anger at Miranda and not Big as if Miranda single handedly ruined the wedding. What was the point of Jennifer Hudson coming to NY only to get a LV bag and go back home to St. Louis? Really?

One more point... it felt like the longest. movie. ever. 5 hours of my life wasted.

I watched Sex and the City for a while, but I thought it was very.. I dunno. I really didn't like the Carrie character because she was always going back to Big. The only guy who treated her nicely was that Aiden(??), and she dumped him....twice! LOL

I got bored with the TV show, so I wasn't even interested in the movie.

I did love the clothes, though. And I like the energy of "the city."

But some of the other stuff.. well.. I just lost interest in it.

When Big didn't show up at the wedding the first thing that came to my mind was she should have stayed with Aiden.

As a matter of fact, when she dumped Aiden, I stopped watching the show. I couldn't bare it anymore.

Yes, it's it weird because I really lost interest by the way she treated Aiden.

I realize this is life, I guess. But you know, I never looked at the show as empowering woman as maybe some did. Maybe it did, but I got confused.

I never quite got this either and couldn’t understand the cult-like following. I remember feeling somewhat insulted rather than empowered or understood. Outside of a bit of fashion the appeal was pretty minimal.

I don't agree. Everybody has a different reality. cool

As a single woman living in a city (sorta, kinda) I could relate to a lot of their experiences and found it refreshing that they showed women like this, fabulous but flawed and trying to find their way. I know women like all of these characters, black and white.

I really identified personally with Miranda especially with her relationship with Steve. When the show was on I was dating my own little underachieving Steve and had to make tough decisions about that. I'll never forget lying in bed next to him watching the episode where she tried to buy Steve a suit for her business party and he got upset and broke up her. We had just gone through the same thing minus the break up.

There are tons of scenes that they showed Miranda, and even the other girls in, that I was like, "been there, done that." It was fun to see these real things depicted on the screen. Then the movie fucks it all up by having even tough as nails Miranda take back her cheating ass husband. hammer

Man, I loved the TV series up through season 4. I watched seasons 5 and 6, but they were pretty awful. But the movie pissed me off for several reasons, most of which you already elaborated on. But here are a couple more for me:

1) Either show some dick or don't. That half-second, barely visible flash of peen is annoying as hell to me--and not only for prurient reasons. We got to see Miranda's boobs onscreen for what seemed like forever (seriously, that sex scene between her and Steve at the end, I felt like I was spying on them or something), and we saw plenty of T&A from the anonymous girls Samantha's neighbor bangs. The way this movie (and the whole series, really) objectifies female flesh but not male flesh is really annoying to me.

2) When Samantha gains, what, a whopping five pounds and they all act like she ballooned into Shamu. They're horrible about it. And then Carrie has the nerve to say, "Of course you'd look beautiful at any weight." That's such bullshit. Why'd they treat her like crap before that then?

3) Why is Stanford chasing Anthony around when Anthony has never been anything but a bitch? Even the gay men on this show are throwbacks to a less-enlightened era. And what happened to Marcus?

4) The puns. Why do they think they're funny? They bugged the shit out of me on the TV show and they continued to in the movie. Every time Carrie said "St. Louise from St. Louis," I wanted to scream.

5) I don't know why, but I really, really, really hate that dog Samantha got. I hope they kill it off before they do the sequel.

6) Wait, why do I care about the sequel? Damn, this show has its hooks in me deep.

Yeah, ummmm, I got that. My beef is how the characters were depicted versus the series and how Carrie bitched up regarding Big. Besides it's not like it was a movie introducing brand new characters no one had heard of before. So, after 6 years of character development it's odd that the movie would not show the main characters exhibiting more growth and evolution, is all I'm saying.
