The Exorcist. idc what anybody says, i haven't seen a movie since to scar me the way this one has.

and while i don't find the movie scary this character is horrifying.

While it wasn't scary, it was erie and pretty cool. Shandow of the Vampire - It had William Defoe as this guy and John Malkovich as a german director. http://en.wikipedia.org/w...he_Vampire

Exorcist is mine as I saw it at the show when I was five and it still holds up. Poltergeist when it came out was some REALLY scary stuff but now it's cheese. Never that afraid of Jaws...

Those Asian ring movies are really the scariest stuff in a while (because of that stop motion technique) but I'm always looking for the scary Ghost Stories. What Lies Beneath fits the category...

Wait the endings are different?
The remake was Keiffer and Jeff Bridges right? (I liked that one).

I'll have to Netflix the original it if it is.

omg
I remember that movie!!!!

It creeped me out, (was about 7 or 8 at the time) but didn't really scare me.

HOWEVER, I vote for THE EXORCIST. When it came out, my aunt (in Honduras) has a housekeeper who went to see it, and afterwards had to be institutionalized!!!!

OK, now I'm older and realize that she probably was mentally unstable to begin with...but when you're 7 years old, it scared the HELL outta me!!!! I only saw the movie for the first time when it was re-released a few years back with that extra footage!!!!

My vote is also for The Exorcist. It plays now as a decent, intelligent enough horror film with dated special effects, but back in the day it was just an unchained beast!!! shake

the invocation of all these old movies shows how much today's movies just fall short or the art of tale. These movies are all classic. Today's stuff is just a mess for the most part.

Why is that? I see these trailers and commercials for thease "new" horror films and they still don't look scary, or they are trying to hard to be scary.

I rank The Exorcist #2 on my list.

THIS is #1, IMO:

THIS was the first horror film that ever made me think that something like this can AND could be a true story for anyone.

THIS is #3 on my list, since it did scare the hell out of me during childhood:

eek Poltergeist? Really? I thought it had to many funny moments to be scary.
"This house is clean" lol

Sometimes you may never know the whole story of what kind of ground they build some of these houses on. THAT in itself is scary.

I don't care how old this movie is or how many times I have seen this, this movie always scares the "hell" out of me!! I can't believe it came out in 1973!
Has anyone seen this for the first time recently?

Heck yeah!! The Exocrist is so scary, I have never seen the movie...ever and don't plan on it.

I just remember my parents telling my sister and I to go play in our rooms because they were about to watch an R-rated movie on HBO, this was before we had multiple channels. Anyway, I could hear to movie from downstairs....and the sounds scared the hell out of me!! So you know if the sounds were scary, you know the actual pictures were going to be scary.

The remastered director's cut was a lot scarier when I went to see it at the cinema with my girlfriend at the time.

PanthaGirl

The Exorcist (directors cut)
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
Evil Dead
Scalps (not sure if it would still scare me now as it did when I was a child)
The Shining
Salems Lot

Most others such as Suspiria, Poltergeist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Gargoyles, Halloween, and Friday the 13th don't scare me, they're a good quality laugh.

The Exorcist is just ridiculously frightening, I still can't watch it alone nor after dark so don't go out of my way to view it. It freaks me out and saw it for the first time by the age of 5, and for years I was having nightmares. Amazingly the book is more graphic and frightening then the film.
