Replacement CD's

If you have legally purchased a CD (not the tape or album) and it has become scratched, broken or lost, do you think it is morally okay to download the CD from the 'net and burn you a copy? I think it is because the artist already got the money.

Is it legal to do this? If not, is there a legal way to replace the disc without schlepping to the store or EBay to purchase a new one?

That's my reasoning... a vast majority of my music was lost or stolen during a variety of moves from x's so... git'cha tunes on!

Leviticus says I can't have sex with my wife during her menstruation or for seven days afterward ... that's not about to happen. Let's find another reference other than the Bible.

It's not legal, no. lol

I guess that's up to you to decide how you feel about whether it's moral or not.

I already said I don't think there is anything morally wrong with it. I am asking the opinion of others.

If your jeans wear out do you think you get to steal another pair (assuming they're the same kind)?

Dude, you know you just took that shit out of context.

I know for games you can just send the publisher your scracthed disc and they will send you a new one. I did this waaaaay back on an old Pentium computer I had. Not sure if things have changed since then.

okay, yes you can exchange lots of stuff depending on when you bought it, but seriously I don't think my comment is way out of context.

Stuff wears out, you have to buy replacements (morally, at least). Simple as that.

That's the whole deal with the music. You aren't buying the music. You are buying the rights to listen to it. That doesn't expire just because you drop the CD and scratch it or someone steals it or your stupid dog chews the crap out of it. (I no longer have that dog by the way).

I don't think you took it out of context ... more of an apples and oranges sort of thing. I have no problem paying a modest price for the actual cost of the packaging and whatever it actually cost them to make the disc. I don't think I should have to pay the licensing and whatever moneys the artist and producers get. I already paid that.

Now, if they come up with a new format like going from cassette to CD, that you have to pay for.

Well, I used to have the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" soundtrack on CD and I saw a copy on wax yesterday at a second hand store....I put it on just for old times sake, y'know..just to give myself a bit of a flashback. lol

Obviously in circumstances like that, I'm not gonna go back & buy a new copy, I'm gonna download it instead! lol

One example off the top of my head...

Over the years I have purchased 3 copies of "Pretty Hate Machine", all three got stolen. I figure after paying full price 3 times, I can download a couple songs from the album I like.

I also have downloaded CD-quality versions of some stuff I have on LP or tape, mainly because of budget issues. Some of it, I admit I will probably never buy (Jill Jones) but other stuff I have gone ahead and bought the actual cd after downloading it first, to support the artist (I did that with a few Duran Duran albums)

that makes some sense, actually. CD's aren't worth $15 of material. Maybe if you have proof of purchase paying $2 for replacement disc would be reasonable. Now if only they'd offer that kind of thing...
