"A lil handgun under her armpit" is not an innocent little tattoo to a 12 year old who might be a fan and think, wow, guns are cool. That was my only beef to be honest, otherwise I couldnt care less how much she weighs/eats/tatoos herself. . [Edited 3/29/09 4:44am] How is that different from, say, a skull tattoo or some other like image that's very popular? What bearing does the fact that she has young fans have on what sort of body art she should have? You aren't honestly trying to suggest that kids will think a certain thing is cool because they see a singer with a tattooed image of it? Are you honestly saying that has no bearing?

This young lady is dumber than I thought. A gun tattoo? WTF? Immature and stupid. And yes, it does send the wrong message to the young people who admire her.

When Madonna first started out with the bangles and leggings etc, in her early days, a gazillion young girls copied her style. You are naive to think that young fans dont emulate their idols by dressing like them, that can also include the tattoos. Artists set trends with their style or lack of it in this case and many follow. It glamorizes guns in my opinion. You cant compare skulls with guns, skulls have never killed anyone and destroyed lives. The comparison is pointless.

Sure, some people will copy their favourite performers, even down to their body art, but that says more about the intellect of someone who'd do that than it does anything about the performer IMO. Rihanna just strikes me as a yet undercooked, trend-stricken postadolescent. Hopefully, she'll grow up.
As to tattoos in general, I think they can be quite beautiful, even profound, statements of who a person is. But I suspect the vast -- the vast -- majority of tattoos I see these days adorn folk who are 1) simply followers of trend; 2) without any semblance of aesthetic or cultural appreciation; and 3) lacking in the level of introspection that arguably should go into making a permanent surgical amendment to one's body. I just can't imagine there'll be (or rather maybe I hope there won't be) so many elders walking around in, say, 50 or 60 years who feel a pissing Calvin or dripping cherry says something about who they've been or are as people. BUT... (and this seems obligatory) to each his/her own. Certainly, no one need live by my standards. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

My father and mother were walking with my daughter and myself into the Yankees spring training game here in Tampa yesterday. A man walked by with his girlfriend. He was covered with ink. A bio-hazard image was the entire back of his shaved head. My father starts to bitch and moan about how he'll never get a job, how stupid that is, what an idiot...etc. etc. Pre-game, they unveiled a new 9-11 memorial they are building at the stadium. They had the engineers and architects there also. They introduced them. Tattoo guy is one of the main architects of the memorial. I mentioned it to dad, and he just smiled. I stopped reading after "Yankees...." "Always blessings, never losses......"

I have one very small tattoo in a place where it's seldom seen. It has meaning to me and I've never regretted getting it. I've had it for almost 30 years. I agree that the vast number of people getting tattoos today don't have a clue as to why they're getting them and what their tat actually means. Also, if I see one more woman with a tattoo on the small of her back, I just may puke and I'm not the only one who feels this way seeing as these are being referred to now an the "tramp stamp". Getting a tattoo is a personl decision, but some are in such poor taste and meaningless. I feel that Rihanna's fall into this. Perhaps it means something to her, but for me it just means violence and death. [Edited 3/31/09 12:45pm]

I read somewhere she chose it as a symbol of protection. Guess there's the meaning. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Yeah, I don't agree with using a gun to symbolise protection either, but it's her skin. I have a cartoon character on my leg as a badge of courage. I bet loads of people would tell me that's a stupid idea. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

It's tiny so it's going to lose it's shape quickly...it'll smudge into a blob. That's why I go big me too Just started to the right side of my stomach, side, ribcage, area... OMFG!!! that is the most painful spot. Say it's just a dream...
