Anne Hathaway to play Judy Garland I've always thought Anne Hathaway would make an excellent "young Liza Minnelli" - like in the years she was on her mother's TV show, and you can't get any better than Judy Davis in the made-for-TV movie a few years back... but now this? I'm very curious to see what this will be like. (And especially since the Clarke book was so frowned upon by Luft and Minnelli, who said "Who is this guy? He wasn't ever in our living room? How does he know our mother?") Here is the press release: (Natalie Finn Natalie Finn Mon Mar 23, 7:31 pm) Los Angeles (E! Online) A star has already been born, but apparently Anne Hathaway's Oscar-nominated role as a tempestuous recovering addict in Rachel Getting Married was just a warm-up. The 26-year-old It girl is attached to star in upcoming film and theater productions of "Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland." The dual projects are based on the 2000 Gerald Clarke-penned biography about Judy Garland, the wee (4 feet, 11 inches, per IMDb) actress with the huge voice who went from child star to MGM golden girl to walking tragedy before her death at 47 of an accidental barbiturate overdose in 1969. "We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role," said Harvey Weinstein, whose Weinstein Co. optioned the rights to Clarke's book. No word on whether Hathaway, a classically trained soprano, will lip-sync, as Marion Cotillard did with Edith Piaf's iconic vocals in her Oscar-winning turn in "La Vie en Rose," or if she'll provide her own take on Garland's signature sound. Judy Davis, for one, went with the recordings in her award-reaping turn as Garland in the ABC movie "Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows," based on the memoir by Liza's half-sister, Lorna Luft. I've always loved Judy Garland and she had such and interesting and tragic life. This movie should be very good.

Anne's not beautiful enough to play her. I actually never realised how beautiful Judy was until I just saw the picture of her in this thread. I think Natalie Portman would be better.
