My best friend is always trying to get me to go that 99 cent breakfast IKEA has. I'm like "Fuck that, let's go to Denny's!" We don't have a Denny's here anymore either. All my Minnesota trips are planned around food. Shake it til ya make it

I used to be very afraid visiting my friends houses with food and customs I was unfamiliar with. The things I do and like make more sense when I am in sweden. Ok. It's weird that way I think, even considering that you spent nearly all your life in Australia you'll find more at home here in some ways. I know people who were born here and raised by immigrant parents trying very hard to raise their children in a Swedish way to give their children the best possible position to make it in Swedish society. Then the children (my friends) go back to wherever their parents came from and they feel like they REALLY came home even though they don't share language and culture at all. there are many things, like for example swedish people seem houseproud, they have little ornaments and actually have some bits of art here and there (I can only speak for my relatives I guess ) and like houseplants on the window sill. Bathrooms tiled all white floor to ceiling - maybe you don't notice that stuff, but I find Australians with their outdoorsy lifestyle don't put as much time and effort into making their homes homely and bright and inviting. Houses here are dark and cold. I have to make kanelbullar, since of course you can't buy them here - that will always bring me nice childhood memories, and hallonsaft like my grandma makes it and did you know strawberries here are huge and sometimes hollow and don't have much flavour

Having bought nearly every item in my home from Ikea, my impression after a few years is that their stuff is inexpensive AND cheap.
However, it has true value in that it generally works for its intended purpose. I have never bought anything from there that I didn't use because it turned out to be so crappy. I just haven't every totally loved anything from there, either. My Legacy

Next week we do daylight savings and then it gets really light. It won't get dark until 7.30pm and then we're still moving towards the light for another 2 months. Cuz I'm like 5. i was there this weekend looking at curtain panels and wanted some espresso. So i looked and was sorely disappointed by anything that was there. It was what i recall school lunch being like, minus the soda fountain and coffee. To make a thief, make an owner; to create crime, create laws.

My office is down the street from an Ikea.
Sometimes I go there to have the swedish meatballs w/ lingonberry sauce for lunch. My wife loves Ikea. A good 70% of the stuff around the house is Ikea (I'm counting shelving, bathmats, candles, etc.). But yeah, as it's been mentioned before; you get what you pay for. Most of it is disposeable furniture. Some stuff is solid (we have a revolving videotape holder that's going on 10 years and still going strong) but alot of their stuff falls apart or gets damaged really quickly. it's weird but i have no need for almost anything when i go to IKEA now i just don't need it. (growing out of ikea? i dunno) i'm still a sucker for the as-is room though. and the summer outdoor stuff on clearance? whoa doggie i really have to bargain with myself not to get too much. it's still hard for me to bypass the lighting section
my coffee/ end table/ shelf/ tv stand are all LACK and i want to get rid of them and replace with antique stuff from home. except there are no such things as antique coffee tables or tv stands

[Edited 3/23/09 16:32pm] I have the same wall unit in my place. I don't mind their furniture like that, but I really detest their couches and chairs. I HATE the fabric and most of the colours. I also can't stand when someone says, "Oooh, you got that at Ikea, didn't you?" Usually when I buy something there I customize it in some way.

Our EXPEDIT desks fit into place with less than an inch to spare (wall to wall) so it looks pretty "custom". We don't have any of their couches, but I don't mind some of their leather ones. The slipcover ones scare me for the reasons that were mentioned in someone's prior post.
