Dad helps deliver little girl on sidewalk in front of Kelowna, B.C., hospital

KELOWNA, B.C. - Riley Rose Hawthorne couldn't wait - so her father had to help deliver the baby girl on the sidewalk right in front of the local hospital.

Joanne Hawthorne's second baby wasn't due for another nine days when she began having contractions on Tuesday.

Hawthorne's husband Sean drove her to the hospital in Kelowna, B.C., and the couple almost made it inside.

When Hawthorne told him the baby was about to make her debut right there and then, he insisted that couldn't happen, she said.

"We took two more steps and then her shoulders came through and my water broke, with a big gush all over our feet. And he started screaming, 'Get me some help, get me some help, I'm having a baby on the sidewalk.

"He tried to push her back in, he didn't want her out on the sidewalk," she said. "I said 'Don't do that, that hurts.'

Hawthorne said the whole thing happened so fast that the baby was being cared for in the delivery room 10 minutes after the couple left their car.

Both mother and daughter are doing well.

Riley's middle name is Rose because she was born on Rose Avenue.

If she was born on Rose Avenue, she wasn't born in front of the hospital, but to the side. wink
