Fashion & the Economy

Apparently what was fashionable in the lte 70's early 80's is what the in thing is now. which is where the economy is now also.

so what happened after that in the mid/late 80's with the economy?

Maybe it's a regional thing, but what I've noticed around here leans toward a blend of a vaguely 1920's look with an early '90's grunge thing. Think cloche hats and plaid flannel dresses, Coverall shorts with retro-looking buttoned heels. It's an interesting mix.

in the 70's there was a return to a 20's style your suggesting

i thought one of the major companies/design houses in this style is a lesser known BABA. I believe it was called BABA or BABBA anyhow. I never see much on it, but when i do see it in older fashion magazines it has a distinct style from the rest, pretty much exactly how Madonna is dressing these days.

This other common clothes were just a stripped down version of a 20's-30's style.
Babba was an over the top version.
Like all design this style was also reflected in interior design too, like Karl Springer for instance who admittedly imitated designers from this period, especially Jean-Michel Frank.

nod You're welcome. I love Biba. I love the 30's-inspired looks they created back in te 70s. nod If you can find vintage Biba dresses, they are worth a lot of money these days. They brought the label back in recent years, but I'm not sure they did so well this time around. In fact, I don't even know if they had a collection this season at all. hmmm

http://www.bibaexperience.com

I would have loved to work here back then!

And the original designer for Biba has brought back some wallpaper prints with the Biba "logo" design on it that you can buy now though. Very cool. nod

i think the later 70's early 80's totally bit off of the Biba style, especially the mass produced stuff.

and i think its back for now anyway, for the people who are intune its back full throttle Biba style even if it doesnt have the label.
and for those that are clueless shopping at walmart, they will be wearing their own watered down version. But women get to play more with clothes and new styles than men anyway. sigh

Are you a man? I had no idea. lol redface But yes, women are lucky with that sort of thing. biggrin

but hmm, I don't know about early 80's and Biba being too much alike though. hmmm The wide-legged trousers were definitely not done in the early 80's. It was all drain-pipe pants and jeans by then. But I agree that this style is again all over the place right now and I love it. nod

and so many so often! this one just happens to be a gold mine nod
a VERY small but surprisingly decent vintage section
i found two vintage disco dresses for both under 5$ regular price
i'm wearing one to my convocation nod

lol

(not clothing, but i almost got a prime condition clarinet for about 50$ the other day sad i was bummed because i was so broke lol - not many shifts)
[Edited 3/3/09 19:56pm]

this is almost exactly like one of the disco dresses i found:

only she's electric blue and shimmery (and thinner material - polyester falloff ) and has slit on both sides (that i'm thinking of hiking up a bit more)
and the belt is of the same fabric, not v-cut like that one

i'd add my own cinch belt anyway nod

touched

That dress is LOVELY, samm.

Speaking of cloche hats (i was, earlier) I bought the most awesome vintage forest green one yesterday. Not from a VV, though. Regardless, second-hand shopping has been my favourite way to get clothes for years, and in this city there's no shortage of cool shit. nod
