Do you float?

So... This week, I've been taking my wife and daughter to the local pool to teach them to swim. My wife floats like she's filled with helium. (I suspect her big issue has been simple lack of coordination when it comes to her stroke/breathing. That, and probably not wanting to get her perm messed up. rolleyes) But my daughter simply isn't buoyant! She's not afraid of the water at all... and she propels herself through the water fairly well. But in a relaxed state, while she bobs very near the top of the water from the torso up, from the torso down she sinks like a rock!

I'd hoped she wouldn't have this problem. While I can swim, I experience the same issue. I truly only stay afloat from the torso down when I flutter kick, and I've never been able to tread water without real work.

We are all quite lean (we've even been called "skinny"), but while my daughter and I have quite muscular lower halves, my wife's got a big, round butt and... well... girl curves. lol I've read that fat is far more buoyant than lean muscle. Does this mean my daughter very likely will have the trouble I do in floating until she hits puberty and fills out like my wife?

Do any of you -- especially the org ladies -- have similar problems? And what about when you were younger?

I float.

My ex used to joke that I would have survived the titanic thanks to my curves.

"How'd you survive ma'am?"

"I dont know...I just started floating away!"

Women do float better than men, generally, it is just biology, it is to do with how sub cutaneous fat is stored. Not to say that she has too much but some of the skinniest female divers i know have to distribute their weight packs on ankles and wrists to make themselves sink easier because of how the female body distributes fat.

Doesn't it suck having your spouse on the ORG sometimes....such a simple observation as above yet you have to back-track and expain what you meant so you won't offend.

I have always been good at floating. I guess it is because I am not a big fan of swimming under that water...unless there is a turtle to see while snorkeling.
