Rumors of Apple Netbook Re-emerge
Jeff Bertolucci, PC World
Mar 10, 2009 8:00 am
You can take many Apple rumors with a grain of salt, but this one may have legs. According to a DigiTimes report, Taiwan-based Quanta Computer will build a new netbook computer for Apple. Quanta manufactures laptops for most of the top consumer electronics vendors, so its involvement in an Apple netbook project wouldn’t come as a surprise.

DigiTimes, which cites a story in the Chinese-language Commercial Times, says Taiwan-based Wintek will supply touch panels for the long-rumored Apple netbook, and that panel shipments will likely start in the second half of 2009.

If these stories are true, it would appear that Apple is moving forward with its also rumored large-screen iPod Touch, envisioned as a touchscreen device with a 7- to 9-inch display and a virtual keyboard. Such a netbook would eschew the conventional keyboard-screen design of mini-notes from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and just about everyone else.

Unlike a traditional iPhone or iPod Touch, the Apple netbook would likely be large enough for watching HD video and running standard desktop applications. An external keyboard would probably be optional as well.

Apple execs have blasted today’s netbooks as cramped and underpowered, and they have a point. It’s intriguing to imagine what a little Apple innovation could bring to the genre.

What would an Apple netbook cost? Split the difference between the $200 iPhone/iPod Touch and the $1000 MacBook, and there’s your sweet spot. A $600 Apple netbook would be competitive with the Asus/Acer/Dell crowd too.

Chinese newspaper says Apple prepping touch-screen netbook
By Nick Spence , Macworld.co.uk , 03/10/2009

As Tony Bennett sang at the end of January's Macworld Conference & Expo, "The Best Is Yet To Come," reports suggest that Apple might just be prepping a brand new innovative touch-screen netbook.

Last Tuesday's announcements of updated iMac, Mac Pro and Mac mini specs raised a mixed response from the Apple community and analysts alike with some disappointed with the lack of "one more thing" brand new Apple innovation.

Summit Studios Stay on Top of Storage: Download now
Despite hopes and rumours, Apple failed to introduce any wholly new Macs, with no sign of an Apple netbook, an ultra portable potentially competitively priced laptop, ideally suited for surfing the Web, sending email and everyday tasks.

Now a Chinese newspaper suggests a Mac netbook, or MacBook mini/MacBook nano, could be a reality sooner than later.

Taiwanese company Wintek is reported to be supplying touchscreen panels for any new Apple netbook, while Quanta Computer will actually make the ultra portable Apple laptops suggests DigiTimes.

Apple netbook shipments are likely to begin in the second half of the year suggests the newspaper although no details are given to support the claim.

Apple are, publicly at least, known to be lukewarm on the idea of an Apple branded netbook believing that the iPhone offers all you need on the move including email and Web access, while netbooks generally suffer from cramped keyboards and compromised displays.

In late January, Apple COO Tim Cook said, "right now we think the products there are inferior and will not provide an experience to customers that they are happy with."

However Tim Cook did admit Apple are, "Watching that space... We've got some ideas here."

Should Cook and co introduces a netbook it could help increase significantly Apple's laptop sales, already enjoying significant growth. During Apple's December quarter, for example, laptop sales increased to nearly 1.8 million units from 1.675 million.

One potential sticking point however may be the retail price with observers suggesting Apple need to sell any netbook for under US$500. Based on current Apple laptop prices, starting at $999, £719.00 in the UK, Apple may struggle to meet the expectations of those who believe Apple can compete with budget netbooks from the likes of Asus and MSI.

I agree. I think we're in this strange period of techno flux, where ipods & iphones exist simultaneously. The moment there's a 120g iphone, we'll start talking. razz

As far as the whole PC/apple thing goes. I made a decision early on to go down the PC road. And now it's way too late to turn back. The thing is, though, for all the benifits of a mac, I don't regret my decision one bit.

As long as you have a healthy attitude towards the computer, everything is fine!

lol
I really don't want a gadget with a phone in it. Last thing I want when I'm browsing porn, is that the darned thing rings and it's my mother (for example)
See how the nintendo DS lites are being promoted now? with different colours, satchels and accessories for them? That's how I'd like to carry around my shameful little secret lurking
I'd like a netbook on the counter in the kitchen to browse recipes, whilst plugged in to my hifi playing my iTunes.
I'm not sure touch screen is going to be my thing though, I'd wear out the screen in a month.
And I've been using macs since 80s, and probably won't be changing to PCs, I'm an old dog now.
