Marathon running.

Hi there,

I have just started training after around 10 years of inactivity(I'm 37) for my first marathon at the end of October.I weigh 105kg.Any runners have tips for starting traing on first marathon.I have been running around 3-4 days for the last 3 weeks and am up to a distance of around 3 miles per run.Any ideas how to tackle the marathon as it seems a big step from my current 3 mile to the full 26.I have set myself a finishing time of under 5 hours.

Thanks in advance.

Wish I could help. I know Carrie Mpls has joined a running club. Maybe she has some words of wisdom!

I am working up my time on the treadmill right now, try googling a plan 10k in 10 weeks. Gives you a good start. 2 1/2 miles a day to start with..gets the heart beating.

Why? Are you doing resistance training too? Or just cardio?

Thats a good idea about starting off with a 10K.I'm using the marathon primarily as a goal to lose weight. It makes me go out running on nights when I don't feel like it or when the weather is bad.Every time I skip I feel that I am running out of time to build my way up to 26 miles.
Does running become enjoyable at any stage.I haven't had a run yet where I actually enjoyed it.Its been a tough slog every step of the way.Although I do not feel sore the following day after a run like when I started 3 weeks ago.
I also haven't lost any weight after 3 weeks.I have a pretty good diet.I thought I would have lost something by now.

It is gonna take 5-6 weeks to start seeing weight loss results at least. I can only say for me but i enjoy running so it is ok. Also make sure you take 1 or 2 rest days a week, they are really important for your muscles

Someone I work with is training for a marathon and he's on a set training schedule that increases then decreases the distances run leading up to the actual marathon. I would guess you can find some training guidelines online, just check google.

Thats true as I read somwhere that the rest days are nearly more important than the training days.Would weight training help in conjunction with the running or will that add weight?

muscle weighs more than fat....depends on how you wanna build and what your goals are. Simple equation is burn more than you take in

You'll want to try something very low impact on your off days as running is so hard on the body. Yoga is a great complement to running. Will help improve flexibility, strengthen your core and lose inches. If you want to do weights, I'd suggest low weights with lots of repititions instead of trying to lift the heaviest thing you can.

I ran a half marathon before. Training for that was enough for me. I can't imagine adding another 13 miles to it. I got close to Jesus on mile ten.

But yeah, you start off running thrre miles every other day, then four every other day, and so forth. I loved it. My butt was incredible from all the training.

Wow good luck to you, would love to do it with you. I love running but that would be a serious challange for me. I really only run on the treadmill but I keep it interesting by doing different programmes every month or so, I'm doing interval training at the moment...good for building the heart muscle up. Check out this site, has lots of really usefull information on running and training for marathons.
