M.I.A. names her son Ickett?

I don't know this woman's music, but I know a bad name when I hear it.

God, talk about asking for your child to get his/her ass kicked every day - Ickett????? Why not go a step further, and name him Wifteypoo? Ibidibob?

That's fine, you don't have to like it.

The problem isn't kids getting weird or non traditional names, it's assholes making fun of names that are not "John" or "Jill".

One would think that with so much exposure to other cultures and names, people would get over "weird" names already.

And the more I say it, the more I think "Ickett" is kinda cute. biggrin

The thing is that as a parent you need to not only look at if you like the name, but also what your child could get picked on. Anybody who says differently probably hasn't been bullied for anything to do with their name.

I'm more worried about why kids are really bullying in the first place not in trying to pick names to keep bullies at bay.

I'm a bigger picture kind of person - many people are not.

I'm sure you are, but as you say many people are not. Until the world is filled with people like you, I feel that parents do have obligations when picking names. I don't think any child ever wants to think "why did my parents name me this?". twocents

If a bully wants to pick on you, they're gonna find a reason, name or not. Fear of bullying is no reason to discard a perfectly good name.

Ickett is NOT a perfectly good name. Some names are more inviting to bullies and that one takes the cake.

Exactly.

I'm super sensitive to the issue of bullies because I have an older brother that was tormented as a kid after skipping a couple of grades.
