Baby kidnapped from maternity ward~ Our world is going to hell in a handbasket. On friday, here in Santa Barbara, a crazy lady walks in to our biggest hospital, and walks out with a newborn! She already has 4 kids of her own, and wants to give the new lover in her life a baby, but can not the natural way, as she has already had her tubes tied. So she decided to go and steal one, from the local hospital.
Now she sits in jail, her kids aged 8 to 15, are without a Mom. What in the world was she thinking??! $750,000 bail for alleged kidnapper - March 1, 2009 6:57 AM Kidnapping, burglary and other charges face the woman accused of walking out of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with someone else's baby. Leianna Patricia Arzate, 33, was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail at 4:41 a.m. on Saturday after a night of questioning at the Santa Barbara Police Department. She was arrested at 3:30 p.m. on Friday by police in Santa Maria after allegedly kidnapping a nearly 5-hour-old boy named Julian from the hospital maternity ward, at Bath and Pueblo streets, three hours earlier and driving him to a home in Santa Maria, about 75 miles away. He was reunited with his parents at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital about 7:25 p.m. on Friday. Authorities said the baby did not appear harmed. Julian arrived back at the hospital in a pediatrics ambulance and was escorted in under the watchful eye of a K-9 security guard. A person with knowledge of Ms. Arzate told the News-Press that Ms. Arzate, who has four children of her own and is not able to have any more, may have been motivated by a desire to provide her boyfriend a child. She was arrested with help from the Santa Maria Police Department. A jail commander on Saturday said Ms. Arzate was being held on $750,000 bail. The Santa Barbara Police Department could petition for a higher bail amount. Ms. Arzate was booked on suspicion of kidnapping a child under 14, willfully inflicting harm that could result in great bodily injury, kidnapping and burglary. She is set to make her first court appearance on Tuesday. Officials with Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital say an alarm system that tracks newborns by way of wristbands went off when the boy was removed from the area inside the hospital. But they were unable to explain how someone could have gotten away with such a precious cargo. They said an assessment of the security system is under way to ensure that something like this doesn't happen again. [Edited 3/2/09 10:19am]

There are still women out there who think that a baby will keep a man? Well that's unfortunate.

Isn't that just crazy? She was willing to hurt her own family/kids to satisfy the urge to give another man a baby?!

Yes, she was out the doors, and drove to a home 75 miles away. She was caught on surveillance camera, and identified within minutes. There was an "Amber alert" put out over the radio stations and televisions, with her name, age, weight, licence plate etc. within minutes...and she still made it all that way, scary stuff for sure...and all of my 4 kids were born in that hospital.

yeah, my mom mentioned this to me last week. She works off of Garden about 2 miles away from Cottage.
She was told as soon as they discovered the baby was missing they put the hospital on lock down....but she was already gone, she put the baby in a bag, and left. Okay, so what are the wristbands good for???? Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize u simply imagined this So u lean over and give her a kiss Here on earth, here on earth, with u it's not so bad Here on earth, here on earth eye don't feel so sad Stay right here

Now see...I hear stories like this and it's clear that woman needs psychiatric attention while she's institutionalized. there's no way she's right in the head to simply walk into a hospital and do this

Okay, so what are the wristbands good for???? The wrist bands set off the alarm, but she was still out the damn door! She put the baby in a white bag, and you can clearly see her walking down the hall with the bag in the surveillance video. But by then it was too late. Scary stuff! There were helicopters every where, looking for her, and she still made it to Santa Maria!

Okay, so what are the wristbands good for???? The wrist bands here set off an alarm system IF you can get the baby out of the Mother's room 1st that is - if you cut the band it sends an alarm notice too there are check points/security on the maternity wards doors - bags are checked, all that jazz I wonder what the security system at the ward is ?

From what I understand, they were set off when she left the maternity ward area, she had gone in the Mom's room wearing "scrubs" and said she was taking the baby for some tests. She then walks out of the maternity ward, with the baby in a white bag, the alarm goes off, by then she is out the door before the Hospital goes on lock down.
