Interview With the Vampire movie -does anyone else find it odd ...that Tom Cruise would take on such a blatantly queer role, one in which the author has outright stated is such, when he was already dogged with rumours of being gay? Especially considering ol' Tom has shown to be a bit squeamish as far as teh gheyness is concerned, and during the time the movie was being made gay and AIDS paranoia was still rampant in the mainstream?

no.
But I do remember that Anne didn't want him to play Lestat. I think the main reason that he went after the part so hard was that she didn't want him to do it, plus it was pretty sought after and had the chance of going on because there are so many more books. I must say I prefer stuart townsend as Lestat though even though I hated the liberties they took with the movie "queen of the Damned" I wish they would make a movie about the mayfair witches. I caught the Feast of all Saints on showtime last week. It was ok ~buttah is a HUGE Anne Rice fan~ We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Thing is, it's never been a secret that Anne Rice's vamps are incredibly sexually open, even with the fact of their not actually having intercourse of any kind. Tom Cruise, being strongly opposed to those persistant gay rumours, is usually quick to brush off even the suggestion he's a bit light in the loafers. Maybe he was just oblivious to Lestat's hard-on for Louis? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I loved the movie.
One of my fave homoerotic parts was when Armand and Louis are in the museum towards the end. It looks like they were going to kiss. I literally shouted "kiss him", in the theater. I don't know. As much of a buffoon as Tom Cruise is, he doesn't shy away from sex, cussing, drugs, etc in his movies. He doesn't seem to be that uptight about the images of his characters
Similarly I saw John Travolta on SNL doing a skit as Dracula, wondering why everyone thought he was gay. I don't know if that was directly related to rumors about him, but it seems like it. My Legacy

I'm no huge Tom Cruise fan, but he seems rather professional when it comes to the craft. This was a challenging, respectable part for him at the time and it stood to make a killing at the box office. Those were his key incentives to take the role, and I think he did a pretty good job with it. He's never seemed terribly moved by "the rumors," and he shouldn't be. i really wish that they would strike the 'Queen of the Damned" movie from the record and re-do it (and "The Vampire Lestat") and re-boot this potential franchise. there are at least 2 or 3 more good books in there to be adapted before the series turned to meandering, self-indulgent crap that could really make for great movies, if QOTD hadn't sucked so bad.
and yeah, a Mayfair Witches movie would be pretty good. so would the Mummy.

Tom has never seemed threatened about gay rumors. He laughed it off on Oprah when an audience member asked a similar question when this movie came out. He asked Tom if he was afraid people would think he was gay because of the movie, then Oprah asked the guy if he was concerned and the guy said the people he knows already think he's gay and Tom cracked the fuck up and said it didn't bother him. Tom never paid for pages in a paper to proclaim his heterosexually like some other people did Under certain circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer.

That it is. But it's still queerer than a catfart -the very reason so many love it so. Without the sexual (sub)text a lot of people who adore it would have just ignored it. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

[Edited 3/2/09 18:25pm] ...and yet he sued that porn star who claimed to have had a relationship with him for libel and defamation. Being called gay can only be defamation if you consider it something to be ashamed of. And since it's doubtful he'd have reacted the same way had a female porn actress claimed to have knocked boots with him, I'd say it's safe to consider Cruise as, at the least, uncomfortable with the subject. Didn't he also have a hissy fit after that South Park episode where the kids try to get him to come out of the closet, or am I imagining things? My point is, Tom Cruise has never really taken a positive or even neutral approach to the rumours, so on thinking about it, it seemed strange to me how readily he accepted the role of a bisexual undead frenchie. and yeah, a Mayfair Witches movie would be pretty good. so would the Mummy. QOTD needs a serious Hulk-ing, for sure. Just start over from scratch. IMO The Vamprie Lestat and QOTD, if done as movies at all, should be done seperately. I know the stories interlock, but there's too much backstory involved in both to cram them into one movie effectively. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I honestly don't think he cares as much as we think. And I only recall his getting really pissed over the porn guy's allegations. And I'm gay, but I would have at least sued the guy too. It's one thing to speculate about stuff like this; it's another thing to actually allege false charges and claim they directly led to the breakup of Cruise's marriage. That's just foul. I think the defamation goes beyond the "gay" accusation when it's a porn star claims to have had an affair with a married man. You can assume how he'd react if had been a female porn star, but it's just an assumption. [Edited 3/3/09 13:58pm] My Legacy
