This makes no sense. Richard and Eddie were working at the same time, Eddie's pushing 50, they acted in movies together, and it just feels weird.

This may sound strange, but I'd give Marlon Wayans consideration. I think he can act (see Requiem For A Dream). But he may have done one Scary Movie or White Girls too many to be taken seriously.
[Edited 2/27/09 12:40pm]

Shawn Wayans could be a better choice(for resmeblence reason). Although that woulda been the DEATH of Eddie, losing the role to Shawn lol since he can't stand the Wayans.

I like the idea of Marlon nod Shawn can't act to save his life, he'd ruin the whole damn thing lol Eddie may be too iconic (& too old now) but hey...

Beyonce is going to to play Jennifer Lee. Filming will start after production of "Wonder Woman" is finished.

Naw, just kidding. Let Beyonce' do her thing and let's show her some love.

Eddie's talented and great at character efforts, but I worry about a contemporary of Richard's doing his biopic.

Naw, they didn't fall out, just don't work together anymore. Both of them were seen together at a premier for some movie a few years back (can't remember the movie.) They were also part of the "Black Pack" a group of young comics that featured also Arsenio Hall, (Eddie's right hand man),Robert Townsend (Keenen's best bud), Paul Mooney. Damon Wayans and Chris Rock.

More reports on it:
http://www.blacktalentnew...2222.shtml

Eddie Murphy ("Dreamgirls") has reportedly signed up to star as the late, legendary and iconic comedian Richard Pryor in the biopic based on the book, Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?. The film will reunite Murphy with his "Dreamgirls" director, Bill Condon.

Media reports say that Murphy has waived his usual fees to play his idol in the low budget flick, which has a price tag of $25 million.

Pryor's career highs and lows, including his well-publicized battles with alcohol and drug addiction and his struggle with multiple sclerosis, will feature heavily in the project. The comedian was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the 1990s and died of cardiac arrest in 2005 at age 65.

I don't know, I'm getting a little tired of stars playing other stars--specifically people in the same field. Beyonce is a bigger star than Etta James, Eddie Murphy is also a legendary comedian. People talked about George Benson playing Wes Montgomery or Prince/Andre 3000 playing Jimi.

Why don't they just cast an actor? I think the star power & associations that eddie would bring would only hinder the performance.

No doubt he'd do a great impersonation, but is that what you want from him? A movie about R.P. would be serious & tragic at times. I don't think an impersonation is quite right.

I wouldn't want to see Dane Cook play Steve Martin or Gwynneth Paltro to play Nicole Kidman either.

Because for certain roles that require musicianship/singing, it's easier to find someone in the industry that already has one of those skills (instrumentation/singing) and can act, whether their acting is average at best (Beyonce) or great (Jamie Foxx).

yeah I can understand why they do it--aside from the commercial appeal of Beyonce for a kind of limited interest subject like Etta James--but I think it's more effective to have something like Forrest Whitaker playing Charlie Parker than to have a sub-par actor (I didn't mention Jamie Foxx because I consider him an actor and he was really good.

Since it's not a musical, I think a good actor could pull off performing some of Pryor's material and be a better actor.

but they don't pay me to have these opinions...yet!

Richard couldn't even pull of Richard in his own bio-pic. Might as well give Eddie a shot. He is, after all, an Oscar-nominated actor.

Eddie playing Richard is just too surreal. They don't resemble each other. They're (kind of) contemporaries.

There are a lot of talented black actors who could play this role. What about Hill Harper?

Looks nothing like Rich either. I realy hate this idea.

Eddie Griffin has mentioned something about becoming close to Richard before he died, and getting a blessing to be connected with a movie version of his life story if it ever came to pass. I might have to go back and look at the stuff he did since his "Dysfunktional Family" stand-up, but I could see a glimmer of something in him that might be able to channel Richard.

After Dreamgirls, I can picture Eddie (Murphy) being adept at capturing the drama in Richard's life (growing up in a whorehouse, the freebasing, etc.)...but I'm still skeptical if he coud channel Richard's stand-up persona. I don't know why, but something feels like a piece of the puzzle is missing for him to serve up all the outrageousness and make me believe that I'm watching Pryor onstage.
