I understand it's based on the Indian society and their pursuit of pleasure through yoga, sex, human behaviours and the spiritual dimension being the gateway to achieving that realm through human contact, all forming the basis for tantrism etc etc. There have been hundreds of versions of the kama sutra books since then and became more photographical with the years.
