Arthouse is another term for Indie. nod

wink Eh....it's evolved into that grouping, but actually they started out as films that usually have deep content as in social/psychological issues, stylized by the filmmaker, heavy in ambiguity, self-defining/epiphany issues, many are period pieces, and some have open endings, all aimed at small, niche audiences - things not normally seen in traditional Hollywood narrative films.

ACTION

Superman II
Empire Strikes Back
Batman Returns

(wow, these are all "part 2" sequels - go figure shrug )

COMEDY

Waiting for Guffman (no movie has ever made me laugh harder than this one)
Sleeper, Bananas...basically any of the old Woody Allen slapstick comedies
Polyester (there are Waters movies I love more, but as traditional comedy is concerned, this is probably my favorite)

DRAMA
Dead Man Walking
Dancer in the Dark
The Straight Story
Angels in America

HORROR
Nosferatu (Werner Herzog version)
Inland Empire (probably not technically a horror movie, but it scared the crap outta me all the same)
Trilogy of Terror (mostly for the Zuni Warrior Fetish part, of course bow )

MYSTERY
Mulholland Dr.

SCIENCE FICTION
Star Wars (1977)
The Black Hole (I loved Old B.O.B. and Vincent when I was a kid)
The first Star Trek movie
The 5th Velomint

DOCUMENTARY
Grey Gardens bow

THRILLER
I don't know if I like any thrillers. hmmm

WESTERN
I don't know that I like any westerns either, though I used to enjoy watching reruns of "Wild Wild West" on TV. shrug

ART
Basquiat (a great story - plus, Bowie as Warhol, Courtney Love as Madonna, you can't go wrong)
3 Women
Eraserhead (anything by David Lynch, really)

ANIMATION
THE IRON GIANT ( bow x 1,000,000)
Nightmare Before Christmas

RELIGIOUS
The Color Purple? I think of that as a movie about spirituality.

MARTIAL ARTS
Do the Kill Bill movies count? boxed

MUSICAL
XANADU!!! woot!
Purple Rain
Absolute Beginnes (kind of a bleh movie, but some great musical numbers)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch

ROMANCE / CHICK FLICK
confused

ADULT / X-RATED
Shortbus (though I do *not* consider it porn...it's more like a hyperrealistic date flick, lol)
Pink Flamingos (I don't consider this porn either, just good ol' filth.)
