Okay, not really a random thought, but something that has been bugging me for months. If anyone knows the answer I would appreciate it very much!

Dog hair - or animal hair in general. How does it know when we cut it that it has to stop growing at a certain point. Like, say I trim some hair and then trim other hair quite a bit more. All the hair ends up growing and stopping at the same point of growth. What triggers that and how does it even know that it's been cut and that it needs to grow.

I realize the same can be said about hair on certain parts of our bodies, too. But, seriously, what makes this happen?

I guess it would really be called fur.
