what happens when no one knows you are missing Imagine going out for a day of skiing on Feb 15th and not coming off the mountain for almost ten days. 
A couple from Quebec went skiing in the interior mountains of BC and although the 44 year old woman died, amazingly her 51 year old husband survived. It seems to be a tragedy of errors. Their teenaged children back home just thought it strange that they hadn't heard from their parents. The couple hadn't rented any equipment so the ski hill had no reason to think there were any lost skiers. They had checked out of their hotel room that morning so there was no alarm bell there. They had rented a vehicle but had rented it from Calgary... so not even any remotely connected to the resort area. The Kicking Horse resort apparently checked for unattended vehicles and found none as the car was in an underground parking lot at the resort they had stayed at the night before. However there were clues that were ignored. On Feb. 17 a local heli-skiing company received a call from an off-duty ski guide touring the area who had spotted an SOS sign and strange tracks west of the Kicking Horse Resort, the statement said.
The Kicking Horse Resort was contacted to check if they had any reports of missing skiers. It appears at this time that the Provincial Emergency Preparedness and the local RCMP detachment were not contacted, said police. Then again on Feb. 21 a group returning from a ski trip saw two more SOS signs and notified the heli-skiing company who in turn reported it to the Golden RCMP, said police. The Kicking Horse Resort was contacted and they advised that they had previously investigated this incident with no result, said police. story here The SOS signs were deemed old and were ignored. The poor man kept seeing helicopters overhead. The children reported their parents missing on Feb 23 and a search was started Feb 24th when a helicopter actually spotted the man. He actually skied down to his rescuers an hour after being spotted. The RCMP are admitting that they failed to explore the information properly on Feb 21st and that a search should have been initiated. That was already the couple's 7th day on the mountain. 
Foss told CTV Newsnet that when he was finally able to pick up Blackburn, he told him that they had walked for days, trying to find their way out and then stopping to create shelters as they went.
"It's pretty incredible that he actually survived," Foss said. "Ten days in the Canadian wilderness in the winter is pretty significant." It's still not clear how the couple, who had brought along only two granola bars, survived, nor at what point Fortin died. There was a nearby creek from which to drink and Blackburn may have eaten foliage to survive, police have said. The nights were particularly cold, dipping to -24C at night with the wind chill, adds CTV's Chris Epp. "The weather here is brutal even at the best of times," he told Canada AM. This story reminds me of the movie Open Water (based on a true story) about a couple that was scuba diving and accidentally left stranded by their tour boat in shark-infested waters. The tour boat didn't notice them missing until days later and they were never found. | |

although i thought "open water 2: adrift" was totally harrowing. i could totally see that happening for real. everyone jumping in the water and later someone notices everyone forgot the ladder.  [Edited 2/26/09 12:22pm] and true love lives on lollipops and crisps | |

...his brother had gone to B.C. with his wife for a romantic Valentine's getaway and ended up lost in the snowy mountains with no food or shelter. He said at one point his brother had to fight off wolves with his skis in order to survive.
"He knew how to sleep under the snow, cut wood, said he'd cut branches. The cold never got to them." Blackburn said the couple ate leaves and snow to survive, and said his brother was more afraid of wolves than the temperature. "The wolves were the most dangerous at night. You could say the same thing about the story in the first post. The SOS signs were spotted more than once and nothing was done. | |

i was probably in the snow for all of 90 seconds while my sister fumbled with my camera to take this shot. I went from being perfectly comfortable to being chilled to the bone. I can't imagine how they managed to survive out there.
and I can't imagine the utter hopelessness when 2 days turns into 5 days and 6 days and on and on. and no one had even missed them yet.
