I can not stand unisex names. It's obnoxious, creates confusion on class role call lists, mailing addresses, and the like. Not to mention the completely absurd fact that many, many parents who choose boy names for their daughters are heavily into enforcing traditional gender roles.

Also, when I hear the name Logan, I picture a hairy, cranky, Canadian mutant, not some cute little princess in a dress.

I graduated with a boy named Catlin, and the school was too big for everyone on faculty to actually know and recognize all the student body. During the graduation ceremony, when Catlin's name and achievement's were announced as he walked across the stage the speaker continually used the pronoun "she", assuming -not unreasonably so -that someone with a female sounding name would be female.

Bet Catlin was wishing like hell that day he'd been named Mike or something instead. lol

Word to the wise: Many of these so-called unisex names on this thread are, in fact, traditionally male names. This cross-pollination in naming of the sexes has gotten so bad I've encountered more than one soul who genuinely believes Madison, Taylor, and the like are exclusively girls' names and always have been. Yeah, 'cause something that literally means "son of" or denotes a traditionally male occupation just screams lace 'n' bows.

Are you sure?

I did a quick internet search, and everything says it's an Old English name, with variations on a geographical, nature-related meaning.

www.babynameguide.com
http://babyparenting.abou...shelby.htm
http://www.babynames.com/name/SHELBY
http://www.thinkbabynames...g/0/Shelby
http://www.babynamewizard...irl/shelby

Don't get me wrong, it's still a nice name. But I doubt it's from the Bible, as it's pretty clearly not Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, or Latin in sound.

No, I wasn't there. But I happen to be well-read on the subject of baby naming traditions and have a decent grasp of basic linguistics. Tell me -how do you get a distinctly Anglo-European name out of a book written in ancient languages found in the middle east?

What part of the Bible did this woman tell you Shelby is found in?

Pretty much any name that ends in the "ee" sound are traditionally male, and most of them have French or English origins.

Hilary
Whitney
Ashley
Brittany
etc.

all boys' names.

Why should my absence from your daughter's birth have any bearing on this conversation?

I did a quick internet search to provide you with examples conflicting with your story, but believe me, my knowledge base on this subject goes a lot deeper than that. I didn't say you made up your story. I said the meaning and origin is incorrect, because it is.

Where in the Bible did this woman tell you Shelby is found? Answer the question, please.

1) The fact that that woman has passed away is irrelevent to this conversation.

2) Baby name books are no more reliable than baby name websites. They are, in fact, notorious for fudging or stretching the truth.

3) I didn't say you were lying about the story, I said the meaning and origin the woman gave you were incorrect. Do some research yourself if you don't believe me.

4)I asked what part of the Bible the name Shelby is supposed to be in, and you can't or won't answer.

What's lame and rude is screaming at a complete stranger on the internet. You're clearly not prepared to carry on a conversation like an adult, so I'll leave it at this.
