African thread. From Algeria to South Africa, Senegal to Somalia...it's one big mofo continent, with close to 1 billion people. Hands up who on the org was born in africa, and where?

Don't confuse the born in the US - americans... most of them don't know Algeria is a country, much less Senegal.
I was born in Stockholm, never lived anywhere but in Sweden.

Oh, and my ancestors were born there, I'm pretty sure. Might have to get that fact-checked by Teacher as she's so obviously more qualified than my inferior ass. Oh shit, my hat done fell off

C'mon. Is the unprovoked anti-Americanism really necessary? Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Most of them were wondering why the US army didn't do anything when Russian tanks entered Georgia (hint: it's also the name of a Country) Thanks for letting me know about Georgia being a country. I'm sure GWB was wondering why he couldn't let his forces loose too.

Necessary only to those that do it - for whaever excuse they use to justify it You know something? When enough people have told me "why should I care about Europe or Africa? Everything I need is right here in the US!" then it starts to get to you. When I've met enough people in NC who don't know Sweden is a country... when I've met Americans in Paris who didn't know France was a country in Europe, they thought that Europe is like the US, that all countries are states but we all have the same government. Tell me if it's unprovoked? Go out into your society and ask 100 people what Algeria is. How many will know? Not many.

And yet the original comment seems no less out of place in a thread having to do with African nativity rather than... oh, say... parochial American thought. Baffling. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Teacher, how many stupid American tourists have you had the pleasure of meeting? Ten? Fifty? 200? What's sillier--their ignorance, or yours for assuming that's an accurate depiction of 303,824,640 individuals? Oh shit, my hat done fell off

Two of my closest classmates were born in Sierra Leone and Uganda, respectively. Their experiences here have been bittersweet, understandably.

Not from Africa, just wanted to point out that I can locate a majority of the 54 African countries on a map and I know that Algeria was a former French colony that had quite a bloody war for independence. (Capital: Algiers) Camus was from Algeria. I wrote my Master's thesis on William Kentridge, a South African artist, so I know quite a bit about the history of 20th century S.A. as well. I also gave museum tours on an exhibition entitled, "Short Century: Independence & Liberation Movements in Africa, 1945-1994" I could go on spewing random facts I know about Africa and its various countries, but what's the point?
Just wanted to illustrate to Teacher that not all US - Americans are complete morons, but thanks for the sweeping generalization. . [Edited 2/22/09 11:31am] The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
