They probably charge you to rent the carts so as to insure that they get them back. Carts are not cheap. Brand new ones cost a store $500 apiece.

Really? Isn't that nuts that they make you pay 25 cents for a shopping cart? lol

[b]Actually, in Germany you always have to pay for a shopping cart, at Aldi or any other shop. You also have to pay for grocery bags. I guess because Aldi is a German chain they just imported the idea over there not researching their marketing demographic very well.

Sorry to hear your experience was bad. It sounds like they really haven't done their marketing research for the stores they're building in America. While ALDI is known as the discount market here in Germany, the quality of our shops is exceedingly better. For example, my typical items from Aldi are New Zealand lamb, Norwegian smoked salmon, orchids, exta vrgin olive oil, sundried tomatoes, biscotti, tiramisu, ect., ect. Our Aldi also has travel agency services with trips to Greece, Italy, Istanbuhl, Sweden, Shanghai, ect. Sounds like they need to do some serious restructuring over there if they want to succeedin the American market...
