Chimpanzee attacks woman, severly injuring her (Conn.) They have been following this "breaking" story on the local NY news: http://abclocal.go.com/wa...id=6661427
STAMFORD, Conn. (WABC) -- A chimpanzee has been killed after attacking a friend of the owner. According to police, the chimp got out of the house at 241 Rock Rimmon Road shortly after 3:30 p.m. Witnesses told Eyewitness News that a friend of the homeowner had just gotten out of her car when the chimpanzee named Travis attacked her. The homeowner, witnesses said, then came out of the house armed with a butcher's knife and began stabbing the chimp. Police arrived on the scene. While they were sitting in their cruiser, the chimp tore off the side view mirror and tried to open the door. Police then shot and killed the animal. The victim, a woman in her 50s, suffered life-threatening injuries with severe facial and extremity bites and lacerations, according to fire officials. The owner was also taken to the hospital after she began having chest pains, police said. She may have suffered a heart attack. The 170-pound chimpanzee was well known in the area where he has lived for years. Travis escaped at least once before, bolting from a sports utility vehicle driven by his owners in 2003. The animal held police at bay for a few hours before he was captured. No one was injured during that escape. The owners were identified as Jay and Sandy Herold. It sounds like the chimpanzee just went berserk. Evidently it ripped the mirrors and cherries off a cop car too. The officers had taken shelter in the car and it started trying to open the doors. The owner is the one who called 911 when her pet started attacking the victim. I just keep thinking of Poe's Murders in the rue Morgue, with the killer orangutan. Not really a fan of monkeys/apes. They seem very temperamental and dangerous. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

another animal killed because of a careless owner. stabbing the chimp??? and we say animals are barbaric. why do people think all animals are acceptable as pets? no one should be attacked but a wild animal is just that.

There's a reason they're called "wild animals". Why the fuck were these idiots allowed to keep a chimpanzee as a pet anyway? A full-grown chimp can tear a human apart with its bear hands.

I don't understand why there would not be a law against a chimp being a pet. That said, if a chimp not belonging to me ever runs out of a house and tries to eat me alive, please, do stab it, however cruel it may seem. Do not wait for animal control to show up with tranquilizer darts or some other humane alternative. [Edited 2/16/09 17:55pm]

Conn. = abbreviation for Connecticut, one of the United States. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. I keep waiting for the newsanchors to explain whether the woman had a special permit, or something. I mean *maybe* if you are in a more rural area, but keeping a chimp in an urban environment seems even weirder to me. I'm interested to hear more about the injuries... monkeys/apes aren't anything to mess with. I guess some people think they're cute, but I just think of them of being tempermental and dangerous...baboons, gorillas, orangutans, no thanks. . [Edited 2/16/09 18:31pm] The check. Travis was the chimp from the Old Navy commercials.

IT'S A WILD ANIMAL FOR CHRIST'S SAKE! "Oh, I don't understand why he would do such a thing. He seemed so nice and he seemed so happy" blah blah blah. Bloodclaat jackasses will never learn I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh

I heard the 911 call on cnn- it was horrible- the chimp had ripped her friend open- she thought the lady was dead- she was pleading with the police to shoot it.
she said that the chimp was like a son and when she stabbed it it turned and looked at her as if to say, -"mommy why did you hurt me"? I can't imagine how she must have felt.. And no it wasn't killed to make a cartoon- someone did that being stupid- they said in the caption of the police standing over a dead chimp- "I guess we won't be gettin another stimulus package"- or something like that LOVE HARD.

I think there are laws against having Chimps for pets...wasn't this one grandfathered in or something? I can't remember where or if I heard that
It's a shame they had to kill the chimp, it's ashame this chimp was someone's pet. I just don't see what else they could have done though, he was killing the woman. It sucks either way and hopefully it won't happen again.

The news I've heard has been reporting that it is legal to own exotic pets in Connecticut. Chimpanzees are supposed to weigh no more than somewhere around 50 pounds (I don't remember the exact number). They knew this one was too heavy/big, but they let her keep it anyway. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. I did hear they transferred the victim to the same hospital that had recently completed the first face transplant (or whatever it's called) so I figured it had to be really bad.
