American woman gives birth to eight children A woman has given birth to eight babies in southern California, the world's second live-born set of octuplets.
The mother, who was not identified, gave birth to six boys and two girls weighing between 1 pound, 8 ounces (680 grams) and 3 pounds, 4 ounces (1.474 kilograms), doctors at Kaiser Permanante Bellflower Medical Centersaid. The hospital had scheduled a Caesarean section for seven babies, but doctors were surprised by the eighth. "My eyes were wide," Dr Karen Maples said, explaining her reaction to the last birth. Doctors said the babies were born nine weeks premature but are in stable condition. Two newborns were placed on ventilators and a third needs oxygen. There were forty-six hospital staff and four delivery rooms used for the births. After a baby was born, staff rushed the newborn into another room and waited for the next, the hospital said. But despite weeks of preparation, doctors did not expect the eighth child. "It is quite easy to miss a baby when you're anticipating seven babies," said Dr Harold Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine at the hospital. "Ultrasound doesn't show you everything." Maples said the babies would probably remain in the hospital for at least two months. She said the mother should be released in a week. Kaiser spokeswoman Myra Suarez said she could not release any information about the mother, including her condition or whether she used fertility drugs. Such drugs make multiple births more likely. "They are all doing the best they can," Suarez told the AP. The first baby was born at 10:43 am; the eighth one at 10:48 am. "They were all screaming and kicking around very vigorously," Dr Harold Henry said. The first live-born octuplets were born in Houston in 1998, and one baby died about a week later. The surviving siblings girls Ebuka, Gorom, Chidi, Chima and Echerem, and their brothers Ikem and Jioke celebrated their 10th birthday in December. Their Nigerian-born parents, Nkem Chukwu and Iyke Louis Udobi, said they are astonished and grateful that their children have grown up to be healthy and active kids who are now in the fourth grade. Chukwu told the AP that the parents of the newest octuplets have much to look forward to. "Just enjoy it. It's a blessing, truly a blessing," Chukwu said. "We'll keep praying for them." I think it's abusing artificial insemination and fertility drugs - there are so many people who want children and can't even have ONE and these people do it just cause they can. It's next to impossible to give birth to that many without artificial assistance. | |

I agree with you. We were discussing this in P&R yesterday. It's just wrong to me - unless they're multi-millionaires there's no way they'll be able to support the children either so they're depending on government financial support... just cause they could. Providing for your children is THE most important thing there is, and they knew they'd be getting (at least) 7.  | |

I guess it is easy to judge because I am an only child without children so I do not understand the "need" to get pregnant so much that I would rely on artificial means. That's just me though. They did not do anything illegal. I am sure they will get all sorts of donations from companies, at least in the beginning. Wow, I cannot imagine having a litter of children.  | |

I still freak out about having more than one. I do not think I could handle more than one. I guess some ppl are more equipped to be mothers. A natural instinct or something. I love my four legged creatures.

It's like you say of course, but still there are so many people who looks at me weirdly when I say I don't want kids ever. I used to get that a lot too. I have also had a few women tell me that they wished they had thought about it more before they became a mother. Not that they do not love or want their children, just that they were not ready when they had them. | |

i agree with you on this. there has to be some drugs involved. multiple births like this are very risky for the children. i think that we meddle too much with stuff like this. i know that some people who can;t have kids or are reproductively challenged will try anything but eight kids? | |

and that's why there are strict laws in the UK limiting the amount of embryos implanted in a woman during IVF. I think that the current limit is 2, or at least it was when I had it 5 years ago. Of course there's always the possibilty that this was a chlomid treatment (where the mother takes a course of drugs that stimulate her ovaries into producing multiple eggs, then the sperm is introduced through intra-uterine insemination or through natural sex).
I'm not saying that what these parents did is right - but consider this; you've been trying to conceive for years, without success, the feeling of failure when your period comes every month is absolutely crushing, you're absolutely desperate for a baby (trust me, infertility is an awful thing when your whole being yearns for children). You undergo treatment and its a success, yet at the scan it emerges that you are expecting 7 babies, the specialists advise that you should terminate a certain amount to make the pregnancy viable, but in doing so you run the risk of loosing them all. What would you do? I'm not sure I could answer but I believe that maybe the issue here is why her specialists and the fertility laws in her state allowed this situation to happen in rhe first place. There should be laws to protect the patients from this type of thing happening. It's extremely dangerous for the babies and the mother to be in this situation I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off

I'm 23, at this point in my life, I don't want kids in the near or distant future.
I don't have the patience to deal with them. I'm scared of childbirth. I may be wayyyy too protective. I might end up killin somebody for them. Then I might neglect them when my patience runs low I swear the words "HATER" is wayyy over-rated...smh | |

i can't judge people for their choices, but i do think that docs are so caught up with the progresses that are being made that they are not stopping to think about the morals & ethics of the situation. | |

those poor parents. i'm thinking the experience will be overwhelming. i mean seriously, how do you even get to know a child individually under those circumstances? how do you afford that size family all at once? how do you give the children the love and attention necessary to really grow their brains??

and WHY is it wrong for someone to have this many kids when others others can't ? surely it's not their fault others can't

As a parent of only 2 I can tell you that its fuckin hard work! I can't imagine what it must be like for these poor parents. IMHO they should have been protected from this happening in the first place. Having said that, now that the babies are here I hope they are all well and I truly hope that the whole family get the support that they deserve. I just hope that they don't have to 'pimp' their situation to the media to obtain the money that its going to take to raise this brood. One last thought.- that woman's belly must have been absolutely fuckin enormous and she Must have been in bloody agony - its uncomfortable enough with only one baby in the final trimester! Anyway... Good Luck to them x I'm not stopping. I haven't even taken my coat off
