Prince's last band had a drummer, bassist, and backup singer... all from Houston, right? Also his previous protege, Tamar is from Houston.

Prince does not own a house in Harris County.

I did a records search and cannot find a residence for Beyonce, Matthew or Tina. There is a CELESTINE Knowles that owns a house worth $2,144,918. That maybe her house, but I don't know.

Try Galveston County. What is the address for Celestine Knowles? Is it in Twin Oaks Blvd? If so, that's it.

Not quite sure about the neighborhood where Celestine lives, but here is the link:

KNOWLES CELESTINE

I don't see anyone in Galveston County that may match. Here is their link:

Please, don't compare Texas to Arkansas. We are nothing like them.

Texas has racism for sure, but I wouldn't consider the state racist. In the larger parts of Texas, you don't see it as much as you do in the small towns.

nod And this is true EVERYWHERE not just in Texas OR the South, ask any black person outside of Texas if they've experienced some form of racism they'll tell you "yes" so it's not like Texas owns the patent on that shit. rolleyes

It's funny that you said that. My 13 year old cousin had to do a school project recently. He had to take a poll of 50 people and ask if they had ever been discriminated against. When I asked him of his results, he said that out of the 25 black people he surveyed, 3 said they had never been discriminated against. I thought that was CRAZY!!!

So have you spent any time in Texas?
[Edited 2/12/09 14:24pm]

No, but I've spent some time in Arkansas, and that was an eye opener for sure. Tell me how Texas is different than Arkansas.

I've lived in North Texas and East Texas all of my life. In North Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth area up to OK border), it is very integrated. In the larger areas (I find this true in Houston and Austin as well) you find that even the biggest redneck is friendly, polite and treats everyone with respect.

In East Texas, I would say it is about the same. The major difference would be (from what I can tell), the closer you get to the Arkansas border, some of the Caucasians tend to still have the inferior feeling that a person of color can know more than them or is more successful than they are.

My mother's family is from Jefferson. I find when I go there for family gatherings, it is still stuck in the 1960s. When I have been to the local grocery store there, the people aren't cordial to me. I remember on one occasion, I was in the grocery store with my mother, this lady (who was about 50 or so) deliberately ran her buggy into my mother's. At first, my mother thought she had pushed her buggy into the ladies and apologized. The lady then just proceeded without acknowledging it or saying "excuse me" or "I'm sorry". I know people that work in the schools in Jefferson and they say it is truly a racial divide within the district.

Now, once you leave that area (which I must point out is where Don Henley and Ellen grew up. Don still owns property there and his mother lives in that area), it is not that way. When you go just 15 miles south to Marshall, it is not like that at all. By the time you go to either east or west (if you go east you'll be 20 minutes from Louisiana), the people are friendly. By the time you hit Longview, Tyler, Kilgore, etc., it's not bad. The people are friendly. You get a "wink and a nod" from damn-near everyone.

Austin is probably the most racially diverse and liberal area in Texas. My brother lives in Austin and has to travel throughout that entire region and he loves it. Now, once you get up toward Waco, you may run into a few rednecks, but (for the most part) the people are extremely nice.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that the people in Texas are nothing like the people from Arkansas. I have a good friend from Russellville Arkansas. She is constantly telling me how prejudice the state is. She also tells me of the hard time her parents had getting decent jobs and trying to build a life there. In Texas, it's nothing like that...especially in 2009. My friend tells me all of the time how black people in AR tend to leave the state. She always says they either go to Dallas, Memphis, Houston, Chicago, etc. She said if they choose to stay in AR, they tend to go to Little Rock.

You guys have said alot that I wanted to say. There are alot of misconceptions about our big metropolitain city. ANd one big is that yes we don't have that many rednecks and New York and CHicago have alot worse of a racism problem and it's infact growing. Houston is the 2nd Fortune 500 city in the country. Texas is the number 1 500 state beating New York. It's so liberal and well off in some places some partts of The Midwest look more Southern than Texas. I hear that in places like Michigan and Indiana there are more trailer parks nand more COnfederate flags than some parts of The South. Even Chicago isn't as thumping and metropolitain as Houston I hear. We are more like what you think they are and they are more like what you think we are.

SP lets start of buy saying Texas has the 5th largest city and metropolitain area. Houston the nation's 4th largest city, Dallas the 4th largest metro area. They've both got about 6 million people in their metropolitain areas. Dallas is bigger than Philadelpjia and Houston is bigger than DC.Miami,Boston,Detroit, and Toronto. San Fransisco may be a little bigger than Dallas.

It's huge diverse, and we are the 3rd most gay town in teh country. Some say it's more gay than San Fransisco. The queers aren't as out in Los ANgeles.
Urban,diverityy.....queers? SO yes we have a big club scene. Up until about 10 years ago the club and Rave scene were hott. Texas has alotof ravers, punks,b-boys, and goths. WOuldn't believe but some artists who come here say we make more noise than New York at concerts. We love music and like to party hard. Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails are some of our very favourite bands.

It's also a big arts and engineering city. Lots of museums, theaters and galleries. Texas is the 2nd state for Science, Engineering, and Technology after California. AUstin is Technology, Dallas is Telecommunications, and Houston is Engineering and Science. Rice, and University Of Houston are 2 scientifically renound schools in Housotn as well as UT(Austin), Texas A&M,and Prarie VIew University. The many oil companies are the main hirers if engineers. THe refineries, ships, and pipeplines require engineeers to design them. Also lots of electronics and physicists monitor the flow of oils through pipeplines. They also work at NASA-John SPace Center. Besides oil Houstonis known for Mission Cpntrol. Houston was the first word said from The Maoon. We are known for 2 phrases. "Houston tranquility Base here, The Eagle has landed."
and "Houston we have a problem.". The Texas Medical Center has lots of Biomedical Research. labs working on curing Cancer, world class surgeons and the development of The Artificial Heart.Compaq used to be based here. Dell,ID, Nortel,, and Texas Instruments are a few well known brands here and T.I. has a plant here.

I mentioned money. We have the nation's strongest economy as of now. Our housing industry is still megabooming even with the national trend of foreclosure. Having a 2story suburban house is so common here that my folks from Ohklahoma said they'd never seen so many black people live outside the inner-city before. We also have the nation's second biggest port which makes us a factory-werehouse hub. We have tons of 18 wheelers on the road and or a key distribution point for drugs. Yes our money is plentiful and our prices are far lower than New York,Chicago, or LA> You can get a BIG 2 story home fully loaded for under $200,000 You have to be pretty well off or spendy to spend over $500,000 for a house. New ones come as cheap as $100,000. We've also got 2 major airports.

SOme people misunderstand our enviroment. Texas is far more than desert which I think is the most beautiful. West Texas is desert, mountains, and plateaus. Central Texas is prairies., and East Texas is forests, hills, and swamps. INfact Texas is home to one of the biggest national foresests The Big Thicket. We also sit of The Gulf of Mexico so we have a 700 mile coast. We have great beaches that many people don't realize. Texas is also like 1,000 miles wide. SO not only is it like several states, it has several enviromental regions, and it goes through 2 time zones. We're the 2nd largest state in land mass and 3rd in population. We sit right inbetween 3 regionsof the country and another country. People think of Texas as The South or Southwest. Both are true, Texas is so big it sits in 2 regions. The Eastern part is lilike The SOuth bordering LOuisiana and Arkansas. The western part is SOuthwest bordering New Mexico and almost COlorado.. The Norther part is semi-Midwestern bordering Ohklahoma and almost Kansas. ANd South Texas which is called The Rio Grande Valley borders Mexico so there's ALOT of mexicans and mexican culture. Texas is so big and part of so many regions they have to make one specifically for us. Called The SouthCentral United States it's a region shared with Ohklahoma and Kansas. There is more distance from HOuston to Dallas than from Washington to New York. ANd it's so far from the East Edge to The West Edge it's alot more distance than from New York to Chicago. Infact, El Paso which is on The Western Edge is close to LA than the other side of the state!!

Texas is spread with several hundred miles inbetween cities. That and our cities are spread. They are flat with tons of people in the suburbs. There is no really good mass transist so liek our sister city LA you have to have a car.
People live almost 30 miles out in some areas. Infact the suburbs ar ethe most diverse areas. The Ft.Bend County suburbs make the county the 2nd most diverse in the nation. HOustonis home to huge hispanic, black, asian, nigerian, and East-Indian populations. Infact Houston is the top city for vietnemese and indians.
[Edited 2/12/09 13:29pm]

I don't know what part of East Texas you've been to, but it's not full of swamps, hills and forest. lol

This is how Texas is divided:

You won't find a swamp in Texas until you get close to the gulf.

I don't lmpw what part you've been to but I used tog o through East Texas all the time to visit my familiy in Louisiana. I can tell you for a life beting fact it is nothing but forests and hills. East Texas does have bayous. As you know Houston is The Bayou CIty. Louisiana is swamps largely. And East Texas borders Louisiana. So alotof teh charecteristics pour into that part of Texas/

ANd as for Destiny's CHild I know Kelly has a house in SUgarland The FT.Bend suburb. Beyonce used to live down here but she lives with Jay-Z in New York. SHe may have a house here but it's not her primary home. SHaq lives here. CHuck Norris lives here. MAster P. lives jere. FLava FLav lives here. When they were in concert both Nine Inch Nails and Jennifer Lopez/Marc Anthony said they are considering moving to Housotn.

Yes Dallas is more snobby. Texas is alot liek California in many aspects.Dallas is more liek San Fransisco and Houston LA. Never been to San DIego but it seems it's like a combination of San Antonio and Austin. Like SanFransisco Dallas is more technological and upper class. The houses are more exspensive. ANd I hear there's a NOCal-SOCal thing. IN Texas it's just like that. 1 thing you should know about Texas , Houston and Dallas hate eachother. They are more the snotty upperclass pricey conservative city. We are the mroe bluecollar slutty liberal city. We are really a combination of eachother but we lean in slightly different direstions. Another thing, don't judge Texas on Dallas. It seems to be the first city people thing of when they think of us. Most of the other Texas cities agree Dallas sucks. Possibly cause they try to keep that 18th century ideal of Texas alive. They all want to be Texas cowboys. Any name they can put Texas in they'll do it. Bank Of North Texas, Texas stadium, and even the teams are all Texan in name. The Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks, and Texas Rangers.Dallas is a big 21st century cityt hat doesn't realize it's not small town from the 19th.

And as for racism I always thought Missisipi and ALabama were worse since those are the deepest paarts of The SOuth.I've been hearing latley that Arkansas isn't as intelligent, rich, or racially friendly as even Alabama. That's a shock.
But the traditional "redneck" doesn't esist anymore in Texas/ If you were here yyou'd think you were in New York or LA. The fair amoutn of rednecks we do have are modern. Even they don't wear cowboys hates or western clothing. They talk semi-rock or Hip Hop. They can be intelligent and aren't violent. ANd yes there's little rave problem even with the hicks and hicks. ANd they ones out in the country aren't that slow and stereotypical either. They listen to rock, Hip Hip, and I've even met a goth. They have malls and mide rise skyscrapers. SO your traditional hillbilly is getting allot harder to find in Texas.
Working up a purple sweat.

San Antonio is gorgeous. The people are super friendly but I find that to be true anywhere I've been in Texas. It's about an hour away from Austin and an hour and a half from Houston. Lots of fun stuff to do. There's the Alamo and the Riverwalk, which has a mall with the river running through it. mushy GREAT Mexican food, lots of culture, small town feel in a mid-sized city. You actually can feel like you're in another country when you go to SA. I love it. But be prepared for the heat anywhere in Texas. Here almost every house and apartment has air conditioning, as well as public buildings so I don't really notice except when walking to and from my car. I had a great Prince experience in San Antonio too. mushy

Again, let me clarify that I'm not a big Texas fan in general.

San Antonio is okay. Flat as all get out, but very green and lush.

Humid as hell, rather buggy.

Roads are set in a circular "Loop" fashion. Tell your parents to have GPS or at the very least a very good map of the area.

The Riverwalk is nice. There are great restaurants all around town.
I'm firmly planted in denial

I drove from Oakland to New Orleans about six years ago. The I-10 stretch of Texas was a nightmare. The landscape was so much more barren than I'm used to, and it stretched for 24 hours. lol El Paso, San Antonio and Houston were big eye-openers from the little I experienced. I couldn't believe how segregated Houston was. In the restaurants, in the neighborhoods--there was a real tension I'd never experienced before.

As for swampy weather, I stopped in Beaumont for gas and I could barely breathe when I got out of the car. Insects as big as my damn PALM were HOPPING around as high as my waist. I got the hell out of that gas station as fast as possible. lol

To say I experienced much of Texas going in either direction is laughable, but I definitely didn't dig the little I saw. California has the intercultural canoodling I crave, not to mention the Mediterranean climate, differing terrain, Baja Mexican food and next to no creepy insects. razz Oh, and I never see trucks with gun racks out here. That creeped me out.
Oh shit, my hat done fell off

So why make assumptions and generalizations when you ain't even been here? Just cuz Arkansas is next to Texas don't mean nothing. That's like saying, I've been to New Jersey so I know what New York is like. Texas IS a massive state in size with tons of different people, climates, environments. The cities like Houston, Dallas, and Austin are extremely diverse and are centers for international trade and commerce in a variety of industries. It is NOTHING like Arkansas, but even Arkansas has it's exceptions. Bill Clinton came outta there from a single parent home and went on to be a Rhodes scholar and president. So I'm sure there a lot of people that don't fit your narrow view of Arkansas.

Oh, don't get your panties in a fucking bind over what I think. It's hilarious how you salivate over every post of mine, just itching to argue. I remember reading Katrina discussion boards, and it sure didn't seem like Houstonians were very thrilled about the displaced people coming over to their town. I read some extremely racist stuff back then.

BEAUTIFUL!!!! It is one of my favorite cities in the state. Very laid back. San Antonio is a lot like Austin (from what I can tell). They are only about an hour apart. There is a lot of history in that area with the Alamo and everything, but still a beautiful city nonetheless.

When people refer to "East Texas" they usually refer to the Piney Woods portion of the map. There, you don't see "swamps". Though the Sabine and Trinity rivers flow through there, you don't see "marshes". You don't start seeing those until you get closer to the gulf. The portion of Texas that is near the Gulf and near the lower portion of Texas (that crosses into Louisiana) though on the eastern coast of Texas, is not considered East Texas. Sometimes, they'll refer to it as South East Texas, but not "East Texas".

Oj well then. Houston is pretty racially integrated. The southwestern cities are. It's up Northt hat I here that there is not only much racism but it's very segregated racially.. The blacks live in one portion, the Puerto Ricans another. The Italinas, Jews, Jamaicans, and Irish all have thier towns in parts of the boroughs. In Houston no matter where you go there's usually white, hispanic, and black people. In Southwest,,Northwest, and SOutheast there are asians, indians, and filipinos.

Ues Texas is known for it's wild weather. Possibly from being in the center of the country, on the gulf,, closest to the equater, and Houston's flat and humid it gives us a rollercoaster ride in weather. It can rain Sunday, then be sunny, then be cloudy, the have a thunderstorm, then be cold, then rain again, and then be hot by Saturday. You can go through every type of weather ine one week. And that's the slowest. usually it can be hard rains in the morning and hot sunny in the evening. Has anybody had this where it's dry in your backyard but raining in the front one. Texas weather is so unpredictable we have a game in the lottery called Texas Weather.

We have extreme weather too. It's hot. But Texas is so big it snows in Dallas and can be warm in Houston. We do get hurricanes once or twice every 10 years, but nothing like Florida. THe humidty makes the extreme heat of Houston feel atleast 10 points higher. Plenty of times it feels it's well over 100. Infact it's so hot it never really turns into winter. In the middle of Januardy when
the Northern half of the country was knee deep in snow we were fannin in 80 degree weather. Only at night in the very middle of January does it get below 32.

ANd you mentioned that Beyonce is from Houston. Yes she is. BTW does anyone know the exact coordinates of her house here in Houston. Here's something funny. FOr years when I was young I used to go to the doctors office next to The Pierce ELevated Downtown. My ma and I would often be late and we'd be scrambling for parking under The Piernce. If we couldn't find any next to The Proffesional Building we'd find some adjacent to the church. If not we'd valet.
FOr so many years of living I'd seen that church. Only in this decade did I find out that that's St.John's (church)home of Kelly and Beyonce. ANd I'd always pass and park right next to ti when going to Dr. Austin's. That and my worked at St.Joseph's Hospital right across The Pierce. Don't think she attends reguarly since she's in New York City. Infact there was a few seconds of video on Mtv where they showed the center Beyonce built adjacent to the church for hoemless people. In the background you can see my kid doctor's proffesional building.

I read some extremely racist stuff back then.

rolleyes Heffa please ain't nobody salivating over nothing you say. This is prolly the THIRD thread I've EVER responded to you on and as much as I post that's hardly stalking. hah!

I'm just pointing out how ignorant it is of you or anyone else to make a broad assumption about the people in a place you've never been to much less spent any time in. I also find it interesting that the white folks that ain't never been here nor spent any significant amount of time here would instantly assume the whole state is racist , but the black people that actually DO live here don't view it as a real issue as far as I can tell. rolleyes

Yeah I have to explain that, white people don't know Texas is hardly country or racist. But I'm sure alot of black people outside The South don't either. We have 2 big setbacks to being seen as a regular part of the nation. George Buch and Jasper. Just like I have to explain to foreigners that America isn't nearly all for Bush I hace to that neither is Texas. Infact his adminstration hurt America so bad that even some hardcore hicks in the country turned democrat. It was such a different political landsacape that democrats liek Hilary and Obama had a chance to campaign in Texas.

And yes when I think racism the mjor parts of Texas aren't as bad as many parts of The North.THere may befairly reasonable amounts in The Hill Country but I always thought the stronghold on racism in Texas was in central Texas in Waco and Killeen. ALso happens to be the spot of The Bush ranch and THe LDS Mormouns who molested kids. But as far as racism, I always pictured the heart of The South namely MIssissippi and ALabama asthe homeland of racism. But funny they have the fewes hate groups(and people). The bigger states like Goergia and Texas have the most hate groups. What's funny is that neither of those states have race problem.s Liek another poster said, racism isn't not a problem black people in Texas and neither in Georhia. SO either the research is wrong or we have a whoel lot of passive quiet racists.

I have lived in Houston for a year now after the first 30 years of my life in either a) New york b)Los Angeles c) Miami d) Atlanta e) Orlando.

about Houston:

It is a really inexpensive city
It is far more diverse than most cities I have lived in
It has a stronger economy than most other cities
I am making $15k more than I was last year at this time living in Orlando, so no complaints.
Women outnumber the men 3 -1
It is the 4th largest city in the US and one of the younger cities (in terms of age of inhabitants)

The people are tolerable. I am biracial and the people (blacks, whites, Asians, Latinos) get along with each other as long as we all respect the law. There is money to be made here...

BEAUTIFUL!!!! It is one of my favorite cities in the state. Very laid back. San Antonio is a lot like Austin (from what I can tell). They are only about an hour apart. There is a lot of history in that area with the Alamo and everything, but still a beautiful city nonetheless.

thanks for your review! biggrin it helps, i've never been there before, i lived near ft. bliss texas when i was a little kid.

There are great restaurants all around town.

thanks for your response rose i looked at a map of the city and saw the "loop" roads/freeways....hehehe, looks interesting lol

The Southwest side is not bad. Everything you stated in the first paragraph is true. People would be surprised if they really got to know Houston

That's quite a description! lol I live in California and never been to Texas, but we were gonna have our family reuinon in Houston several years ago. They cancelled it though. If I ever make it to Texas,I'll be sure to avoid Beaumont! I don't wanna be anywhere near a swamp.

It may not be ultra diverse, but people here move at a comfortable pace. Their isn't the pretentiousness of the East and West Coasters here. People here have money, but seem to fly under the radar most of the time.
