I don't think it would have been such a big deal if a black actress had gone to Africa and done this. nobody would care...it would have not made the news for example- Oprah nor Iman get as much attention in Africa as Jolie, etc... Oprah breast feeding????? Yeah that would make news. Oprah jogs and it's on the news.

I think Halle Berry would. She would but to play the devil's advocate, i'm thinking Evvy's referring to black actresses that perhaps are not known to the mainstream market - Taraji Henson, Sanaa Lathan, Joy Bryant etc. (which by the way, have been in major movies and are well famous - i'm just pointing out that they're not BIG in the main media yet, y'know?) I disagree myself, however, I think I can see where Evvy's coming from... [...i think i can, i think i can, i think i can...]

Oh man, I totally disagree with that. I do too. What exactly does the person who posted that know of Africa to say who gets more attention on that continent? Do they have many African friends? Do they keep up to date with African current events and their latest periodicals? The statement seems uninformed (at best).

I just feel like what sammij said- it has to do with mainstream media- and the fact that the child was African. I feel like other famous people have sacrificed alot just to see the fulfillment of their humanitarian efforts= alot of unseen stuff- yet Selma is being noted for this rather insignificant yet remarkable act of HUMANity..... i'm happy it's bringing attention to her cause but .....really.... people have lost life and limb and her donating some milk gets this kind of press..... LOVE HARD.

Yeah I can see why you may think that... ...but i don't think that's how it would go down really i think ANY celebrity female breastfeeding an African baby will get press, no matter who it is and i think that's the issue - the fact this is still something considered to be shocking when this has been both family tradition and forced labour in some cases, for centuries. It's actually (in regards to the mentioning of forced labour traditions) a HUGE class subversion that's taking place with this regardless of what it MEANS contextually, it was right for her to do this and this kind of humanity should be used as prime example. I think what she did was extremely kind and beautiful and selfless. It's better than donating money to some big ass faceless charity. At least she knows exactly where her donation went.

I'm asking because I'm trying to gague how you came to the conclusion that someone of Oprah's stature would not be recognized for the work she does in Africa. While I am not married to an African, I have worked steadily there on location during the last 16 years and maintain a diverse cross-section of African friends both there and here in Europe, and my experience (in terms of witnessing people's cognizance) is completely opposite from yours. Additionally, insofar as black Americans not being as recognized in Africa for their humanitarian efforts, again we differ on this: I don't know what kind of press you get at home in the States regarding this, but I'm quite used to seeing black folk from the US in the media here for any number of ambassador duties and aid missions to Africa, both privately and publically funded. The list is pretty long, including but not limited to Danny Glover, Don Cheedle, Jay-Z, Quincy Jones, John Legend, Harry Belafonte,, Alicia Keys and so on. In any event , the most important thing is that at least there are those out there who want to help. I give thanks for that.
