I think Joaquin Phoenix is acting. But as usual David Letterman has the sharpness to make the guy laugh or almost laugh, which blows his cover. We'll see it all in a movie mockumentary in a year or so.

letterman is an old pro with bizarre guests. the first few years of his show, back when it was on NBC after carson, he had all kinds of freaks on his show - grace jones, pee-wee herman, john waters, sandra bernhard, brother theodore - and they were all returning guests, and they'd be bizarre and wild every time they were on his show. so this is really just a nod to the past more than anything where dave's concerned.

Stern referenced him this morning, in talking about this appearance.

If it was a joke, he did some real convincing acting;
if it was for real, I feel sorry for him to see how life can get someone down like that.

I think he is acting as well. During the last second of the clip, he gets up, takes off his glasses and says "Good Job" to Letterman. Something is up.

the guy is loaded and perhaps wants to remain popular but explore other fields like rap music, etc. and maybe get film script offers that are interesting rather than blockbuster films
i mean, the guy is a great actor but i bet he only gets type-cast for lead roles i expect he will do indie films in the future or something besides, his family has been known to experiment with several substances, etc. if you look at the interview where he announces he will be quitting the movie industry - the interviewer's reaction to that is priceless and sums up how people get too caught up in worshiping Hollywood actors and actresses
