Baryshnikov, Hines: White nights I think this is a really good film with an interesting plot and some amazing dance sequences. Critics hated it though. And whilst you think the plot is far fetched, things similar to the story really did happen in Russia. Plot aside, the dancing is hot aswell. Also great to not see MTV style super quick editing on the dance sequences. Its annoying as hell., though ironically the soundtrack is very MTV LOL. Isabella rossellini (Ingrid Bergmans daughter) is gorgeous aswell. Ironically Ingrid was somewhat exiled from America like Gregory Hines' character was in the film... ...Speaking of Hines, he is not only a first rate tap dancer, but an excellent, believable actor aswell. R.I.P Great film, and essential for dance fans [Edited 2/11/09 19:44pm]

I've only seen him in "running scared" (which is good enough fun) and "tap", which is a nice film. Cant see them making a film like "tap" anymore. They'd have to include some shitty commerical hip hop elements or something for a dance film these days. Both "white nights" and "tap" reach way beyond the simplistic dance movie title (particually "white nights" which does, to me, have a interesting plot). Whilst Iam not a huge fan of "tap", that and definately "white nights" stand up better then most dance films and do have some intelligence and heart.

Great period film directed by Francis Ford Coppola set in the 20s in Harlem with an awesome cast. Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Bob Hoskins, Fred Gwynne, Gwen Verdon, Nicolas Cage, Jennifer Grey, Lonette McKee, Laurence Fishburne, plus Gregory and his brother Maurice. There's even a scene with a half nekkid Mario van Peebles. Awesome! [Edited 2/11/09 20:02pm]

That "cotton club" movie looks really good! Great cast aswell. I'll definately keep an eye out for it. Thanks!
What do you think of "tap" and "white nights" then?

What do you think of "tap" and "white nights" then? I like Tap much more cuz I loved him dancing with Suzanne Douglass and of course Sammy Davis Jr. Not to mention the first time I saw Savion Glover. Although I'm a huge Baryshnikov fan, I liked him much better in the Turning Point with Shirley Maclaine and Anne Bancroft. Great look into the ballet world. [Edited 2/11/09 20:18pm]

All sound promising. I remember Baryshnikov in "sex and the city" LOL, but never knew he did other movies. Thanks for the heads up.

Oddly enough, I woke up at 3 am this morning and The Turning Point was on cable. It's from 1977 and I'll be damned if Baryshnikov wasn't finer than a muthafucka. I bet most straight male ballet dancers are complete whores.

Girrrl, I had it so bad for Baryshnikov when I was younger, if there was ANY chance I could've gotten to that man the DAY I turned 18 I would've taken a trip to all levels of ho'-ishness with him if I even remotely had a chance In his earlier years he had a reputation as a sadistic monster amongst his girlfriends though. Typical playboy ho'with Prima Ballerina ho's in every area code, would fuck you and then leave in the middle of the night, and be at some ingenue trick's apartment afterwards. You know he sent one of his girlfriends sta-raight up crazy with all that rollin' stonin' . It was Gelsey Kirkland. She left New York City Ballet to join ABT for his ass, and by the time they were through romantically she was a coked out mess and addicted to plastic surgery so she could be his and Ballanchine's beauty ideal. Mikail was a hot mess as a boyfriend back in the day. I had to let my fantasy of him go...but I found Greg-ry humpable 'til the day that fine man departed God's green earth [Edited 2/12/09 9:41am]

I could see ho' written all over his ass. He definitely has charisma. I'm not surprised his Russian ass was so damn brutal with them ballet chicks. As for Gregory, I've had a crush on him since I was a lil girl and I saw him dance on the Tony Awards. I still get sad when I see his episodes on Will & Grace.

I had the pleasure of seeing him(and Phyllis Hyman, RIP) in the Broadway musical "Sophisticated Ladies" in '81(such a great year). That MFer could do it all! (Judith Jamison was sick and couldn't perform the night I went).

I remember him performing a bit of Jelly's Last Jam on the Tony's, I believe he won that year. Dude was unbelievably talented, a REAL triple threat. I can't stand these youngsters that refer to themselves as a triple threat. Remember this?

In fact, when I went to see Luther at MSG(in 1988), he came on stage and performed that song with Luther! Had the joint rocking! He brought down the house with his drum solo in "Sophisticated Ladies"! A TRUE talent. Unfortunately, that word is thrown around too much these days. ..and 1981 was one of the best years in music. As good as '84.

...both those brothas left us too soon. About the concert....Anita Baker was supposed to open for Luther that night, but didn't because of "health reasons". I heard she was pissed off at Luther, and pulled a "diva" act. Sinbad opened the concert instead.

Never heard about this movie before, but my dance teacher used to mention Mikhail Nikolaevitch Baryshnikov as an example.
The dance sequences are interesting as well, it's obvious those dancers got a classical background Is there any place of refuge one can flee from this insanity
